Unfortunately I know of none on the Internet.

You can go to this link: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=372213

Or you can call Smith & Wesson's Customer Service Dept. and tell them what model it is, and the serial number (usually stamped on the bottom of the butt). Be aware that guns made before 1957 are not marked with a model number.

Last but not least, go to their website at: www.smith-wesson.com

How about the book "Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson" by Supica & Nahas?

Thats what we have to use to answer questions like yours.

It depends on the gun. For some later guns, the year of manufacture is available in the books. For some, there is enough information to provide close guesses. For others, only a wide range is available but sometimes a closer date can be extrapolated.

If the only reason for interest is idle curiosity, that is probably close enough. If legal issues are involved, then by all means pay the money and get a company letter giving the shipping date.
