In shopping for slugs I've seen two types advertised: Rifled slugs and some are just pushed as slugs. Whats the difference? Which do I want to punch holes with my smoothbore barrel?

Smoothbore bbl you want the the Forster type.

The classic 1 oz slug in 2 3/4 " Just try a a couple of different ones to see what your gun likes.

Rifled bbls or rifled chokes that fit into smoothbores, use the other types.

I like the smoothbore because it is so versatile for so many uses. Ironically , using a rifle choke in a smoothbore, I obtained the best groups I ever have...better than a rifled bbl. Testing a fella's gun...lucky for him we hit a combo that really worked for him.

Me...I like that big old chunk of lead...I use the red ones...over the variety of guns and chokes...seems to be consistent for me. If not that one...the "other" red one works...between the two "reds" ...:D

If a 20ga I just have to say Win and Fed...
I can say in again in .410 tho...:)

Thanks. I'll pick some up this week and go sight in the old girl.
I agree with the versatility aspect. I equipped my Win 1300 with a 22" smoothbore slug barrel with rifled sights. Good for most anything, I imagine, I picked it up for social work mostly, yet for birds and clays I still have the 28" barrel w/ chokes.

Atc1man,

Smart choice going for that combo. Actually FWIW the 1300 was the gun I was referring to. Aside...I have always liked the Win-choke. That Choke, for me has always been concentric, more true to markings. I like the extended knurled to protect the muzzle.

Try the Plain Jane Win and Federal first, then the Rem. in 2 3/4"

If you get extra time and money and want to piddle with it , get a rifled Win-choke and the Win Sabots...That was the combo that surprised me. He used it for deer.

Course out and about bird hunting with the 28" bbl , and deer season still going on he carried some slugs. His Imp cyl Win-choke and slugs from a 28" tube was really really good...put venison in his freezer when the birds quit flying one day. Test "just in case" a deer steps out on you some day...

Versatile is good

:)

For a smooth-bore barrel, you want the Foster(?) Forster(?) slugs....the 'pre-rifled' slugs. The 'sabot' slugs are for the rifled barrels.

Buy the 5 or 10 round box of as many different brands as you can find locally, then try them all out. The one(s) that make the smallest groups and closest to point of aim are the ones you want. Then buy a bushel basket full of that one. (Why I have 250 PMC brand slugs...cleaned off the shelf at my Gander Mountain store a couple of years back.)

Two kinds are there for your smoothbore. Foster slugs, and the Brennekes. Both work well. In my Wingmaster with 20 inch rifle sight barrel, the Remington Fosters work best. In my Browning A5, the Brenneke slugs give better accuracy.
