I'm still fairly new to shotguns and most of my experience has been with trap, but I recently picked up an 870 to use for HD. I was looking at different slug offerings and now I have a couple of questions. I know that rifled slugs are for smoothbores and the saboted slugs are for rifled barrels. My question is: how do choke affect all this?

1) If I have a smoothbore and a rifled choke should I use saboted slugs?
2) What kind of chokes are compatible with slugs? I assume I shouldn't be throwing slugs through an extra full turkey choke. What's the cut-off?
3) Do I need chokes of certain materials to not destroy/be destroyed by the slugs?

Thanks in advance for your responses.

Rifled choke tubes are for Sabot slugs. Your mileage will vary as to how accurate it is.

Do not use with rifled slugs. Leading of the rifling will be bad.

Any choke can be used for Forster style rifled slugs.
No special steel or other.
Best results are usually with Cyl, Imp Cyl, or possibly Mod. Some Full choke guns do very well (Ithaca Deer-Slayer for instance.)

You have to test your gun to see which tube gives the best results.

X-Full Turkey chokes are probably not a good idea, although I doubt a Forster rifled slug would hurt one.

That type of hollow-base slug has more "give" to it then a shot charge.

Thanks RC. I plan on testing out a couple of different brands, I just wanted to know where to start so I don't waste time/money on bad combinations.
