Snake shot

Here in eastern Nebraska, venomous snakes are not plentiful. Oh, they're out there, but not commonly. I managed a gun store, and we received a stainless Ruger SP101 .38special 3" revolver, new in box and never before offered to the public. After some time, upon examination, we discovered said revolver had a SMOOTH bore barrel, and was actually a mistake from the factory.

Sadly, our investor's (bless his soul) health went south, and soon enough we were selling our inventory for less than market value. (I'm still unemployed, although I've submitted my resume to the new Cabela's store opening in December in our area).

Virtually the last firearm purchased from our now defunct store was this smoothbore Ruger SP101. Yeah, I bought it for a song, (I sing like a buzzard!) Although I long wished to fire shotshells from it, to check its patterning, I've since sent said revolver into the manufacturer, with a note as to its defect. By general definition of national NFR rules, this Ruger was probably an illegal to own firearm, and when it returns from Ruger, I'll offer it on AuctionArms!

What's wrong with a smoothbore? What is a smoothbore? Why is it illegal?

You betcha! I hope the rattler that was the subject of this thread was skinned and cooked. Rattlesnake is mighty fine chow...tastes like chicken (really!...but with the flaky consistency of fish.)

Best device for dispatching snakes: a swing blade (a scythe-like thing for cutting brush and grass.)
Uh-huh.

Reckon you make me some biscuits. And I like them French fried potaters.

They goes right good with 'em. Uh-huh.

:D :D

Smoothbore handguns are legally treated like SBS or AOW NFA firearms.
That is why some .45LC/.410 pistols have straight rifling.
It is basically a technicality in definition of shotgun under NFA.
(Cartridge handguns, not muzzleloaders).

I have stated under other threads on the snake shot issue:
if I can safely live capture a snake around or in the house,
I have and will do so, and take the snake out into the woods
and release it; I only kill a snake as a last resort (or if it
panicks the hades out of me on first contact).

The last poisonous snake I killed (last week, as a matter of fact) was with a pre-'64 Winchester Model 70 in .30-06. I was squirrel hunting and had a Hammond Game Getter up the pipe.

I'll say it again - I like the way you think Mr. Humphrey. :D

-Any of you folks actually "pattern" these snake shot loads? "Pattern" - just like one does a shotgun ?

IME the .45 ACP patterns best from a 5" bbl, Gets into all that stuff we shotgun folks learned from Brister, and doing testing of our shotguns.

Hang on...

Kids + Snake-shot loads

In .22 lr, the all brass loadings , by Federal for instance with the crimped ends pattern more often better than the CCI with the plastic ends. Tested with a variety of guns from NAA mini-revolver with 1 1/8" bbl , to Beretta 21A to 4' revolvers to Ruger MKI and MKII, Buckmarks to various .22 rifles.

For little kids learning to shoot with a single shot .22 rifle, I will use these "snake loads to allow them to pop balloons. We are learning safety, correct basics and fundamentals, and to keep kids interested, and build self esteem - they need to "hit" or "see" targets react.

Same reason I use popcorn kernals in reloading really light .410 shotgun loads for kids, and popcorn loads for other guages in teaching other new shooters.

Kids Yes , kids are not dumb, they figure out "shot" versus a single bullet. Still I/we explain how the safety and correct basics translate to being a better "bullet shooter" and how this works for shotguns.

Kids are not dumb.

Fun thing to do? Let the kids shoot a pc of typing paper. Let them use their imagination to "connect the dots", and make a monster, a car, a face, anything, then let them use colors or colored pencils...some even watercolor.

"Steve, I need some help shooting my target from further away please?"
"Okay, what are we testing out here?"
"Well, my dots were too close to connect, so if I stand about here <stomps foot> the dots open up - right?

Like I said, kids are not dumb. :D
