I received my Albanian SKS yesterday and am in the process of cleaning it up. After tearing it down and cleaning off pounds of cosmoline, it was time to attack the stock. Since it is in horrible shape, I decided to strip off the finish. I needed some newspaper to lay on the bench so I headed straight for the 'reading room', which is on the 2nd floor of my house. I grabbed a bunch of circulars and noticed something had fallen on the toilet seat. It looked like a piece of string. Went I reached for it, this piece of 'string' slithered off of the seat and onto the floor!
It turned out to be a small black ring snake. How it got on the 2nd floor of the house, let alone on the back of the toilet, is beyond me. I eventually caught it a put it outside. I'm just glad I found it before it introduced itself to the wife while she was... Well, you get the idea.
As for the Albanian, I don't think I'm going to be able to save this stock, but I'm giving it my best effort. No cracks, but lots of gouges and one terrible repair job that looks to be done with some type of epoxy. At least it had a shellac finish on it that kept the cosmo from seeping into the wood.
