Looking to get affordable snap caps or safe equivalent.

A quick look online shows snap caps to be several dollars each, or like $5-$10 for a 2 or 5 pack of a single caliber! :what: It's a molded piece of plastic...

At these prices it would cost me $100 to buy all the common calibers...

Seems that a grab bag of the most common 10 calibers should be available for $20...

What is a suitable alternative? I've read that some people use pencil erasers or other home-made alternatives...
 
Seat a bullet in appropriate sized case.

Fill primer hole with silicone... if you really want a click, leave the dang primer in !

I use the silicone ones frequently in 44 and 45ACP. Work fine !

IF you want, you can paint the bullet funny colors so you dont get 'em mixed up with real ammo.
 
Blarby nailed it. Dummy rounds with eraser or silicone in the primer pocket or just leave the old primer in. IF its safe to single load your firearms (as in won't damage or wear on your extractor if not fed from a magazine) you can just place a fired brass in the chamber to 'protect' the firing pin if need be.
 
AZOOMS are aluminum and are used as training rounds. If any of these are meant for that use, I would get those for that purpose. Otherwise an eraser works well and is easily replaced after a few hundred rounds. Just make sure you do SOMETHING if using a regular brass with a bullet seated so you KNOW it is not a live one
 
The main problem I have with homemade snap caps is, they look just like "real" ammo, and its near impossible to tell whats in the gun at a glance. Purpose made snap caps are instantly recognizable.

The other issue is what being put into the primer pocket. If there is any chance it could come apart and get places you dont want it, thats not good.

Having tried most, I prefer the AZoom type the best. They hold up to hard use, and have lasted longer under constant use than any of the others Ive tried.
 
Yep. Just made a .223 snap cap with a empty case, bullett, and silicone. I did drill a hole through the side of the case. You definatelly can't mistake it for a live round.

Maybe if you pop it out of the gun. How about when you do a press check? Anything made with brass looks just like a live round to me when you press check them.

I tried all sorts of stuff to identify them, nothing held up for very long. I also always worried anything that might flake, would cause trouble at some point down the road, when I really didnt want it.
 
A-Zooms....

+1 for the A-Zooms brand. I advised my friend to load his new .38spl 5 shot LCR with A-Zooms for dry fire practice.
There are a few other brands out there but A-Zoom comes in a variety of handgun calibers & the prices from most retailers/websites are decent.

I like two particular brands: A-Zoom and Tipton. I like the A-Zoom for revolvers and the Tiptons for semiautos. The A-Zooms wear out kinda quickly when cycled repeatedly in a semiauto, but they're great in revolvers.
