Evening, was just wondering what military snipers that shoot bolt action rifles use to carry thier ammo.Is there some sort of mil issue pouch or what? Thanks!

The only current bolt action rifle still in service is the M24(based off the Remington 700). That I know of. I have been on-spot for it a few times so got a pretty close look to how snipers run them. Some snipers I worked with got an aftermarket butt cuff to attach to the stock. Like the fellow in the picture below. Other snipers I worked with were a little more concerned with dust getting on the ammo. If setting up a LP/OP/Sniper nest, they would have the rifle loaded and carry any spare ammo in the issued box in a pouch while moving. Boxes of ammo between shooter and spotter, so either of us could load the rifle if needed.

The XM2010 is a .300 Win Mag that is a bolt action. Basically a bigger, futuristic Remington 700 with a fancy chassis and a longer barrel. That weapon used detachable magazines. How are the magazines were carried? Maybe a SAW pouch or a canteen pouch.

I don't think there any US military bolt action rifles with internal magazines, like a classic hunting rifle. I think even the bolt action .50 rifles use detachable magazines.

The M24 has an internal magazine. I am not sure how much it is being used now. I believe it has been mostly replaced by other rifles. But in "my time" the M24 was a very common rifle to see. Most snipers I worked along side with did not like loose ammo rolling around in a pocket or pouch. They liked being able to feel, grab, and put ammo in without having to think about orientating it or putting a round in backwards.

So did they use a box of some sort?

Ammo boxes? Yes. Read my post #5. I worked with about a dozen snipers in my military time. And quite a bit more in a consulting fashion. Some did keep their ammo in the issued box to handload into an M24. When working with the M82, magazines and ammo are heavier. So most snipers for that usually had at least 2 magazines. And a spotter. The spotter would usually carry the second magazine and any extra ammo. Although there are very few problems that need more than 10 rounds of 50 caliber slugs.
