The deadliest weapon on the battlefield is neither bullet nor gun; it's the lone sniper. Journey inside the science and psychology behind the greatest shots in military history, through the scope of the world's most extreme marksmen. Deconstruct the missions, ranging from Vietnam to Iraq to Afghanistan, presented by the men who were there and pulled the trigger. For the first time on American television Canadian sniper Robert Furlong, tells the story of his history-making shot in Afghanistan--striking a Taliban fighter from 1.5 miles away. Ballistics... Tactics... Weaponry... Stalking... This two-hour special examines these critical components in vivid detail, combining interviews with cinematic reenactments, CGI and present day shooting demonstrations to put the viewer squarely inside the crosshairs.

I liked the sniper show.

I'm watching the M-16 show that follows right now. Did you know that the 7.62x39 round used by the AK "was designed to penetrate tanks?" That's what the guy just said... yeah...:banghead:

Just finished it, as usual, the History Channel managed to get two hours out of a 30 minute program. And if you listen and watch carefully, every shot was awsome.

I liked the part about how adjusting the turrets on the scope "changes the bullet's minute of angle"

I do appreciate the fact that the History channel shows plenty of gun shows and usually in a positive light, even if their facts are a little shaky sometimes. No other mainstream channel does that.

Cosmoline I dont think they did mention Simo Häyhä...but they did have a segment on Hathcock.

Im sure mall ninja's and armchair commando's loved it. I thought that they glorified snipers, making them seem almost god-like. "I shot so many people I had blisters on my trigger finger" oh and he watched wild dogs feed on the corpses of his victims.

Since I know very little about different rnd bullets, they were referring to some of the ammo as 7.62 in bolt action rifles sniper rifles. What rounds are almost the same as 7.63x39 and what are the minute differences. I know most are very similar to .308 but with my limited knowledge, why bother making different cal bullets other than length for a bigger load? I guess different loads are for different tactical uses.

Why do we have so many different types of cereal and soda? More of life's unanswerable questions.

Humans are tinkerers by nature...always trying to find something a little different, better, unique.

The rest of your questions would take several weekends and multiple cases of beer to answer. Not something you can easily go over in a forum post format. Go buy "Cartridges of the World" or a reloading manual and read it front to cover. Then you will know about 50% of what you need to know. The rest is experience to sort the wheat from the chaff.

Good show. I posted a question here several weeks ago asking why the 308 round was so popular for snipers. I got great answers here and the show explained it very well.

:)

I agree they could have cut it down to an hour with the removal of 80% of the useless "dramatic re-enactment", but that is the first time I've seen those interviews with Hathcock about the legend of the "through the scope shot", or with the Canadian guy about the ~2500 meter shot.

I was kind of surprised to hear them say he switched to some different/American ammo prior to making the shot. Seems that would change his ballistics in ways he couldn't immediately predict.

I was also pleased to see they were destroying Tascos and fakecogs instead of the good stuff during the attempt to recreate the "shoot through the scope". :)

The bottom line is THC has to get ratings so they make the shows to entertain. If they made them just for hard core gun nuts not many others would watch. I'm just glad to do any gun related shows at all.

This is the kind of stuff the liberal media feeds off of. I love it when the medis also refers to the "powerful nine millimeter cartridge".

Back to the show....If you liked this show, then required reading for anyone who has an intrest are two books...
"White Feather", which follows Carlos Hatcock career.
"One Shot , One Kill" this follows the history of snipers in theUs military. (IIRC)

My wife sat through the whole thing and asked questions about it. Usually her only interest in guns is "how much will this cost". GREAT SHOW!!
