Somewhere in a thread discussing (again) the superiority of one model/caliber of handgun over another, military tests were mentioned.
I'm sure these were very serious & stringent . "10.000 rounds fired" were mentioned.
That reminded me of some gun magazines some years back : firing 10.000 rounds with one & the same gun was called a "torture" test.

Is that what a handgun is supposed to be able to stand ?

Most handgun shooters I know visit the range weekly, and it's really not unusual for some to shoot -oh let's say- about 200 rounds with one particular gun each time.
Does that mean that by the end of only ONE YEAR (52 x 200 = 10.800) they've "tortured" their gun to death ?

If you actually shoot with people that are shooting 800-1000 rounds a week, you are hanging out with people that are far beyond the norm.

10,000 rounds is just a number that is randomly chosen to see how many failures may occur during a specific test. I don't think that number represents the "lifetime" of any gun. I would guess that somewhere past 10,000 rounds, you MAY break an extractor...you MAY break a slide stop...You MAY break an internal spring or need some other minor repair but, as a whole, the gun keeps going.

When I shot IPSC seriously, I would on occasion, shoot 1000 rounds a weekend. Did that for several years. I never broke a part on my .45. I've know PPC shooters that shot 25,000+ rounds a year out of thier revolvers for years straight, never broke anything. Of course, .45's and .38 Specials are not particularly hard on guns. Could they have gone that many rounds firing .357 SIGs in an auto? Full house .357 Magnums in a revovler? Maybe not.

most of the time when they torture test they will shoot 10,000 rounds in one sitting without cleaning or lubricating
most people go shooting about 100 rounds come home clean and maintian theyre weapons

I rather like it when someone says something to the effect of "Mr. Eggspurt's Brand X wundershooter has put a gazillion rounds downrange and he only had to change recoil springs."

So what? Perhaps his has done that. It does not follow that yours will do the same.

Can do and will do are conflated here all of the time.
