So my CZ-75b is ordered and on its way....should be holding it within a week

now im thinking ahead to my next purchase...i hate to say it but i think i want a 1911

why do i hate to say it? because apparently part of me thinks they are ugly outdated junk

but for some reason i still have '1911' on my mind

recommendations on a nice, reasonably priced (read: sub $700) quality 1911?

store down the road has a plain lookin' RIA 1911 for like $420 i think...could maybe haggle down a bit

Couldnt be farther from the truth.

The 1911 is a super durable and reliable firearm. There are many Youtube videos showing guys throwing their 1911 in the mud and sand and they worked perfectly fine. They have the best trigger ever.... ever. Almost no take up and a very crisp and light pull... stock.

It is the official sidearm of Marine Force Recon, FBI SWAT, and many other units around the world.
Honestly, if I was going to war and I had to choose between a 1911 and the popular SIG 226... give me a 1911.

Go rent a 1911, and put the target as bar back as it can go in the pistol range and aim... you WILL hit the target.

There is a reason why the 1911 remains one of the most popular pistols after a century from its conception.
 
Both are great pistols. I own a 1911 and will probably buy a CZ next.:D

Shoot and enjoy the CZ, when money allows add a 1911 to your collection.


The 1911 is absolutly not outdated junk, couldn't be further from the truth their. Some 1911's are certianly junk, a lot of company's make them, some not so well. But John Brownings design is still very much relevent today.


IMHO if you are looking for a sub $700 1911 I would buy a Springfield Mil Spec. I think Springfield finish's their guns better in that price range than RIA.
 
I don't know much about the makers... but my friends have a Springfield and a Kimber. Both seem really nice. But Kimber deals specifically in 1911s and they really know what they are doing. Springfield is one of the original producers and they make a direct copy of the 1911 that was used in WW2, Vietnam, ect... both have really good triggers.

The only thing that bugs me is that I have small hands and therefore its a real stretch to hit the slide stop lever with my thumb.

More like a_legend of a proven platform, consistent light trigger pulls, and it doesn't get any better than having one's weapon cocked and locked and the thumb-slide safety release is so natural to clk down while coming up, and out, with the draw, added the palm safety grips, makes for proven security until needed.. Given their accuracy via the best designed trigger-pull one can always depend on, 1911's just "keep calling out" to so many, yet, to feel, own, and shoot the/a legend..

7 - 8 rounds should do the job, quite well..

Sub 700 You'll probably almost have to get a fullsize model. I'd say up the ante and get a three inch model. Because I don't know about you but there's no way I could conceal a fullsize.
 
Ugly?

I think the 1911 is quite possibly the most aesthetically pleasing handgun ever designed.
 
If you want one, then get one....there's really no use fighting it.
You will not be happy until you satisfy the urge.
Besides, once you have had your 1911 fix, you can always sell it or trade it.

A well made 1911 is certainly nothing that I would call "junk".

And while I don't think the 1911 is especially nice looking, I wouldn't go so far as to call it ugly.

As for outdated....

Yeah, the 1911 in its original form is outdated in my opinion.
It's heavy, and it lacks ammo capacity, and the tiny sights suck.
It was prone to rust and you had to keep it oiled well for it to function reliably.

Fortunately for you, the 1911 has changed with the times.
These days you can find a high capacity double-stack, light weight aluminum alloy frame 1911, with good sights too.
And coatings and metal treatments these days do a very good job of keeping rust at bay.

So go for it, find out what the mystique is all about.
And if you don't like it, or if you are disappointed, well, you can always find a buyer somewhere.
 
Springfield should be good in that price and from what I hear they have a good warranty. I don't know about how the post-move Para's are, but I like the looks of them. On occasion you can find a used Kimber in that range. Of course Colt is the grand-daddy, for a few bucks more you can pick up one of these used. Around here you can find some for $800 used. RIA is made by Armscor I think and seems to have a following. Charles Daly was made by Armscor but I think they're made in Israel now and are in your range new. My bet would be used Springfield. I've seen some full-sized GI's for $550 locally.

Damn you Phydeaux! Bad bad dog! Now I want a 1911! Of course if I had that one I might go blind from touching and stroking...uh...that's nice looking. Do tell more, its so rare to find one without an instruction manual, disclaimer and warning label scribbled into the slide.
 
you guys is funny...i really do think 1911's are ugly, and i happent to thing the CZ-75 (and browning hi-power) is one of the most beautiful designs out there

but guess what...i alsothink Jeeps are ugly, and i love me some Jeep...so obviously looks arent everything

:cool:in my opinion the 1911 is one of the cleanest looking guns you can find. it has simple lines with nothing out of place. the really nice thing about 1911's is that the aftermarket has tons of stuff for them, so you can make it just about anything you want.
 
The Taurus PT1911 runs less then $600 blued. I have one and am more than happy with it. I have run a few hundred rounds in it and have been very impressed with its accuracy and ergonomics.
 
I like and own Kimbers but honestly, I think Springfield is more bang for the buck. In fact, I'd say Springfield is the best balance between quality and price out there right now.

1911's ugly? I don't think so... They're not aesthetically pleasing like an old SAA Colt, but there's a clean, no-nonsense look about them. Beautiful? No. Handsome? Yes.
