i got sent to alaska for tdy and i am looking at gun prices, compared to texas the rifles are more expensive.... but hand guns are cheap. i found a ruger lcp at wally world.(back home wally world wont sale handguns) and the price is great $282 not tax i say sure let me take one and the guy asks where i am from to which i answered texas and he proceeds to tell me i can not buy i hand gun in alaska but i can buy any rifle i want???????

is this true a legal gun owning resident of another state my purchase a rifle but not a handgun? i am going to be in anchorage for 90 days so if anyone has something fun going on or any ideas about this matter please contact me.

Yep. He's right.

Federal law prohibits a dealer from selling a handgun to an out of state US Citizen.

No law prohibits rifle/shotgun sales.

You CAN, however, buy a blackpowder handgun, as they don't count. Gotta love stupid laws.

ok i just thought it soundeded stupid if you fill out your form 1 like everyone else and pass the back ground check but oh well i guess the guy at the gun counter told me a person to person sale was still legal but asking on here makes me feel a little better is that legal whilst out of state?

if you fill out your form 1 like everyone else

Unless you're building an NFA weapon, you're not filling out a Form 1. For regular old handguns, rifles, & shotguns, what you fill out is Form 4473.

And no, a FTF sale between you (a resident of Texas) and a resident of Alaska is NOT legal per Federal law. You were told wrong.

I was not aware of that. I'll have to keep that in mind. I'm guessing they didn't restrict long guns for hunters that lose their guns in transit or it breaks and they need to buy another one to continue hunting. Just a guess.

you can have a ffl in alaska transfer the gun to your ffl in texas, you then fill out 4473 when you return to TX and background checks as usual. You pay the cost of gun possibly to alaska ffl, pay the transfer fees and shipping. After you do all that it might cheaper to buy one from your tx dealer as transfer fees can vary.
Here in DE they are set at 25.00 but my friend payed 50.00 for a transfer in philadelphia for a gun off gunbroker....FWIW

well honestly i am staying in downtown anchorage and am more worried about the legged bear then the four. this city is full of strange and differnt things so far....

Actually, I think there may be a loophole for military members in Alaska. If you show your orders, you can be considered a resident (I think...). Check with somebody on base.

As for person to person sales, check Craigslist. This is Alaska, nobody is going to give you the third degree in a gun sale if you're a clean cut military guy.

You mean Alaska's list
http://alaskaslist.com/

Craigslist doesn't do guns, from their prohibited items list
Weapons and related items, including but not limited to firearms, disguised, undetectable or switchblade knives, martial arts weapons, scopes, silencers, ammunition, ammunition magazines, BB guns, tear gas or stun guns.

Ah, thanks! I only suggested Craiglist because a quick check of Anchorage Daily News didn't show any carry pieces this week - they may have some in the print edition though, because I think you have to pay extra to put items in the online edition. The bulletin board at any Carrs/Safeway generally has guns for sale.

I'm trying to recall what the law is on military members (I used to work in a gun store), and I think now after dredging around in the dusty recesses of my brain, that it only applied to permanent orders because it waived the residency requirement - it didn't apply to TDY orders.

From the 4473
If the buyer is a member of the Armed Forces
on active duty acquiring a firearm in the State where his or her permanent duty
station is located, but he or she has a driver’s license from another State, you
should list the buyer’s military identification card and official orders showing where
his or her permanent duty station is located in response to question 18a.

Yes, but the OP stated he was TDY up there for 90 days which meant he was on temporary duty orders.

Problem is the FACT that his orders are TEMPORARY DUTY

That said, head over to the PX, sometimes they don't ask if you are in uniform, but then I was known....

Wally World? Why would you come all the way up here to shop for guns at that place? You should check out Great Northern Guns if you can find a away around the current Tudor Road debacle. They know the ins and outs of the law really well and can coordinate sales with your own FFL.

This is Alaska, nobody is going to give you the third degree in a gun sale if you're a clean cut military guy.

Trying to dupe someone into making an illegal sale on Alaskalist or our other local swap and sell places is not a friendly or smart thing to do. Plenty of folks do check ID's, precisely because people will try to pull this nonsense. The federal law is idiotic, but that doesn't mean we appreciate someone trying to trick us into breaking it.

The wife and I were in Alaska last August. Wally World does sell handguns as mentioned. Apparently the LCP's have gone up. Every W*M we went in had them for 269.00. Most of the rifles and handguns they had were Big bore. Rifles you don't see in the lower 48 that often.

We were in Anchorage,Fairbanks and several other smaller cities. It's definitely the Last Frontier. I'd love to live there if it were possible.

Killeen isn't that far of a drive, guys from Hood are here on a weekly basis. If you find something you like and want to get it let me know and they can mail it down here and you can do the paperwork when you return.

Even if they didn't ask, it would still be a felony, and a fine way to end a military career.
