Hey y'all,

I'm going to Alaska for roughly seven months or so for work (fishing) and I'm wondering about what I'd need to do to purchase a gun in Alaska while I'm there. I'd like to pick up a single action revolver, but I'm not sure if I have to be a resident or not. Can anyone tell me? If I have to be a resident, how do I go about establishing residence? The reason I ask is that when I'm done there, I'll be moving to Hawaii with my family and REALLY don't want to have to jump through the hoops to purchase on the islands. Any help is greatly appreciated.

You must be a resident to purchase a handgun. I don't know what it takes to establish residency or how long it takes. I assume switching your driver's license to AK would be a good start, and is probably all that you need in such a gun-friendly state. Or you can buy it where you are now, then ship it to yourself in Alaska.

Hawaii is notoriously un-gun-friendly, though, so do not assume that because you bought a gun legally in AK (or some other state), you can automatically take it to Hawaii.

You're better off buying a handgun at home and bringing it with. I think you have to reside in a state for a year to qualify as a resident (but I'm probably wrong).

If you intend to leave shortly after arriving (a few months) it will also be tough to honestly say you intend to establish residency even if the required time isn't a year.

I second the concerns about Hawaii and handguns. Look into that very carefully before purchasing one anywhere.
