and promptly sent it back to them.

I have heard of people in the past have had problems with this such as:

Months later the NRA sending them threatening letters telling them to pay up even when they also sent it back.

There is a provision that says you can keep it free of charge as well but I can only imagine that would open up an even bigger can o' worms.

Georgia Carry being my only gun lobbyist is looking mighty tempting right now....

NRA is a necessary evil I guess.

I consider myself a loyal NRA member, but I really disapprove of this kind of marketing. I got one a year or so ago, I kept it and threw all the follow-up pay up letters in the trash.

Having a net loss on these sleazy kind of promotions is the only sure way to make them stop!

Past consumer abuses of this kind of mailing puts what little law there is firmly on your side.

Goes like this,
if someone send you something NOT ordered by you
through the mail, i.e. this DVD
you get to keep it
It doesn't matter, it's considered yours, just like the rest of the junk mail, you never made a commitment to buy, this is where the book "clubs" and all the other sale type places have fun, see the first one is free, because they can't collect its illegal, but when you send in the card, to get the rest of the set, well now you are in a contract, still you get to "preview" it, see no charge,

just unlike what the letter may say, that first one really is free, except for the phone calls and junk mail...

The letter with the DVD says exactly that: We sent it, you didn't order it, keep it for free if you'd like. If you don't want it, send it back, or give it to a friend, or just accept it as a gift. They spell all that out in the letter with the video.

They are absolutely up front about it and I'm thankful for their honesty. I certainly don't consider it 'sleazy.' I've watched the video and it's not half bad. I may send it to my parents, they being new gun owners and all.

Just to rahash (I've been through this before):
1. If you really want to put a stop to it, keep it-if they call, tell 'em you know the law (unsolicited items) and tell 'em to take a hike.
2. Sending it back will encourage 'em more than point #1
3. A fine point, which probably makes little/no difference, but it probably didn't come from the NRA. Instead, probably from one of the vendors to which the NRA sold? their database.

I once got Top 10 Guns That Changed The World DVD-had already seen it on The History Channel. If I had known what it was, I would have given it back to the mailman for return, but there was nothing on the outside of the mailer to let you know what was inside. After I ripped it open and found what it was, it was probably going to cost me to return it, and I ain't paying to return something I didn't order.

Long story short...they sent letters (right into the trash) and finally called me. I told 'em I knew what the law was, they weren't getting their DVD back, and they could either take me off their list or send me some more free DVDs! :D

Never heard another peep out of 'em.

I have got some of the DVDs from the NRA recently and they were interesting.

~~ BUT ~~

The last one was an empty sealed box.
I was irritated ... but packaged it up and sent it back with a letter telling them if they bothered to send me the actual product, I might actually PAY FOR IT.
And maybe they'll send it ... maybe not. And do I care? :neener::neener::neener:

I got a DVD two years ago. It was quite good. I never sent it back or responded in any way. I've never gotten another one.

I suspect it's just like junk email; if you respond, they put you onto the "active" list and bombard you with more crap. Ignore it and they won't waste any more resources on you.

Since I have not sent it back yet I might just keep it and stick it to 'em.

Im kind of surprised I have been able to fly under the radar for so long.

I received one of these a couple years ago and called the NRA to read them the riot act. I described, in full color, all the ways that this is not how a responsible organization should operate and what they could do with my membership.

The girl assured me that the DVD were to be considered a gift and money sent would be as a contribution only and she apologized for the poor working with the DVD.

I thanked her for her time and told her I would not be cancelling my membership. A quick blast with a lighter across the face of the DVD so they can't send it to anyone else and I dropped it back in their pre-paid mailer.

Good to see they have plenty of new DVD's to mail out and still have corrected the "unclear" request for a donation.
