I had sold my (not too) old and (pretty) trusty Rem 700 .25-06 last week and was stopping in to the various stores in which I bought components to swap unopened bullets and brass. I stopped in the local Sportsman's WareHouse to return some brass and whilst wandering in the hunting section I spied a new Rem 700 XCR II in .30-06 and next to it on the rack, a similar rifle in (gasp) .375 H&H. Now I've been going back and forth between the .375 H&H, a Ruger African in either .375 Ruger or 9.3x62 or a Sako or CZ in .375 H&H or 9.3x62...I took the Remmy down, worked the action, looked at the sights and bought it on the spot. A half hour later I go toddling out to my car toting the rifle, 100 pieces of brass, 100 Nosler 260gr AccuBond bullets, RCBS .375 H&H dies and shellholder no. 4 and a box of Federal Premium ammo for my stop at the local range on the way home.

This was not a completely random event or impulse purchase...as I said, I've been thinking about a medium bore for a while. Also, I had a birthday on Saturday and a present was called for. Finally, the Rem 700 XCR II is about the least expensive way to get into a .375 H&H, and I had a B&C Medalist stock at home that had just come off the .25-06.

I decided rather than burning up $60 worth of ammo, I'd go home do a little load development (I've got a bunch of H4831, IMR 4064 and RL 15 in my reloading room) and journey out next week to take the rifle's virginity. Tonight, I think I'll switch stocks and put my supplies away and look forward to the week-end.

Ahhhh, for simple pleasures like tinkering in the reloading room...

Stay tuned for range reports.
