So I keep thinking of getting a Marlin 336 in .30-30

Trading off something, buying outright new or used, etc....
Wally World has the 336W for $289. Local paper has a 336CS used with a scope for $250 OBO.
For the life of me, I cannot see a difference between the C or the W on Marlins website.
Basically, my hunting area is small fields in the woods with a small box stand with a roof we sit in. My "Bubbaized" .308 Enfield is a little too long to move around for easier shots in the stand and the Marlin is 10" shorter.
Any thoughts on the differences between the C & the W?
Since I collect military type rifles, I even thought about an AK with a scope!
Hey, we do have small deer in my area. Maybe my 16" AR?

The 336CS has a walnut stock; the 336W is hardwood. That's really the big difference. The sights may also be a bit different.

In terms of the rifle's mechanics, though, they're the same.

If there's a local 336CS with a decent scope, $250 isn't a bad price; unless the rifle is beat to hell and the scope is a Tasco Pronghorn, $225 or so is just about an automatic buy in my mind.

Marlins are terrific little rifles, and a lot of fun. But it's hard to stop after just one...

Get one, you'll like it. They're accurate and well made, and most importantly, fun!

Like anyone on The High Road would tell someone to not buy a gun :D
Walnut or Hardwood. Figures! C is Walnut, W is hardwood. Looks like they got it backwards!
Oh well, back to saving my pennies since I just got the Colt GCNM out of hock..................
Might wait until hunting season is over with. Then they go real cheap around here.

need i say side ejection

You should also mention that on some of the Marlin side eject guns, working the action while the gun is turned to the side will cause the cartridge to *chunk* fall out of the action to the ground. Not a problem with the Winchester top or angle eject. Not that I don't like the 336, just a fact.

I have one, am using it almost daily right now. Get the used one, unless it has been really abused there is no way to wear out a lever action. They are well built, simple, reliable, accurate and within the 30-30 parameters are solid deer killers. I dropped a 200 lb buck last year at 150 yds with one shot to the shoulder. Have already put another deer in the freezer last week with it and will be out again all week end. Get a good chest/lung/heart/shoulder shot and they will go down. I have a modest accumulation of firearms but the Marlin 336 goes with me more often than anything else. In my opinion nothing to dislike about it. I load 150g soft points with 30g of IMR 4895.

The 336 is a great gun, but like Nat Greene says, it's hard to stop at one.

Hey, grimjaw, working the action while the gun is on its side? Are you shooting your Marlin ghetto-style? :)

So is the 336 like Garanditis??:D
I've been fighting that sickness for 4 years now. I've got Colt 1911itis real bad though!! :neener:

Yo dawg, I'm a cowboy.

Actually, just trying to eject brass onto the table rather than the concrete. I don't think it would be that common in the field, but it's there all the same.
