Today was a range day for my Ruger No. 1A in 6.5x55SE (rapidly becoming a real fave of mine). I get sub-1" groups of 3 with Rem 140 gr Core-Lokts, PRVI Partizan 140 gr Soft Points and all my hand loads. Plenty of tinkering left to do but a successful day.

I next went out to lunch and stopped in at the local Gander Mountain for some Shoot-n-C targets. While there, I spent a while examining a Winchester M70 SuperGrade in .30-06. A beautiful rifle in a magnificent piece of tiger-striped walnut. My next rifle will be a Winny SG...now to decide on a caliber. Since I'm pretty well covered in reasonable non-magnum calibers, I'm toying with either a .264 Win Mag or 7mm Rem Mag. These new Winnies are really nicely made and finished. I've been delighted with my M70 EW in .30-06; mayhaps another to keep it company.

I just bought my new model 70, have not been to the range yet but I already love that rifle, almost Tikka smooth action and it feels like a million bucks, great wood and steel on that rifle.

.264 win mag. Bean field rifle if you do your part.

While the 264 win is a fantastic performer I think I am going to build a 6.5-284 Norma on a Savage action for my long range 6.5mm, 50gr of powder through the bore will be alot easier on the throat then 65gr, the performance difference between them is really not much and I won't have the silly belt.

Target rifle? Then .264 will burn the throat.
Deer rifle? No worries. You'll never shoot enough to hurt it. Neighborhood of over 3000 rounds. I don't even have that through my .223 bolt, and it's my fun gun with accuracy to boot.

You could opt for .260 rem.
