...and they are covering the USPSA 3 gun shoot in LV, NV. In a clip of one of the stages, Taran Butler is using a Benelli M1 Super90. His rig is set up with a pistol grip and extended mag (and vent rib barrel). This, I thought, was against 921(a)/922(v).

Is there an exemption of some type for anything like manufacturers or builders or something to get around the 921/922 tha I am not aware of? Are pre-import ban semi shotguns OK to soup up?

You can put a pistol grip, any barrel length you want 18" or longer, and any magazine tube extension you want on any shotgun (unless maybe you are in CA or NJ or something).
Even during the AWB isn't that only 1 "evil feature" (pistol grip)? I'm pretty sure most mag tube extensions don't allow more than 10 rounds and they aren't detachable. Shotguns don't usually have bayonet lugs either :D

I bought an M1 Super 90 Slug gun about '88, here in MN--the cops' version, matte bluing with standard plastic furniture (no pistol grip), the 18" slug barrel, and the mag extension--will take six 2.5", I think. It came with a two-shell plug as well. (Three shots total)

Then I bought a 26" vent rib trap barrel for it--and I think I have about the best multipurpose SG available.

So, there was nothing illegal in MN in '88 ('87?, '89?) for that configuration.

The provision at issue is 922(r) which prevents anyone from using imported parts to convert a weapon into a configuration that would be banned from importation. Use of American parts gets around this restriction.

Well, learn something new. Thought the illegal modification of imported guns which required sporting configurations (e.g., no extended mags with a pistol grip) by the import ban was regardless of origin of parts.

Thanks for the heads up.

hksw,

Whether or not it is considered "imported" is determined by the number of US-made parts, out of a list of I think 17 possible parts (on the gun, another 3 in the magazine).

The AWB had a 5 round restriction on autoloading shotguns with pistol grips.

The restriction on magazine capacity for imported guns pre-dated the AWB.

So, tell me, which parts would be replaced on the M1S90? (Butler's gun appeared to have the OE buttstock, grip and handguard).
