My sister in law called to ask me what kind of handgun she should buy her husband for fathers day and I'm having a hard time coming up with options. He just got his CWP but owns no other hand guns so I'm trying to come up with a compromise of CCW as well as and enjoyable good shooter. Her price range is in the $500-600 range and my first thought was a certified pre-owned Sig-Sauer 229 in .40 s&w (his preferred caliber) however they're hard to find locally and while a transfer is an option she'd like to look at what she's getting. my brother works for an ffl and they just had a used Springfield XD ported come out for sale so thats an option as well. My only other thought was a CZ of some flavor. I know he wouldn't want a Glock and even the XD is a little questionable so give me some other high quality mid size .40's to look at

Whenever a thread comes up about what to buy the wife/girlfriend, everyone comes out of the woodwork to say she should pick the gun herself.

It should be no different for the husband/boyfriend.

Have her give him a nice card with a "coupon" inside good for one handgun of his choice up to $600.

Sig is the way to go I think. I get that 229 in a heartbeat.

Personally, I don't like the XD. So I'd be inclined to say pass on that.

EDIT:

Gift cards and "coupons" have their place I guess. But for gift giving I always thought of them as a cop out.

Picking the right gun for someone is like picking the kind of car they should drive, you may love it but it doesn't mean they will;)

Just because it feels right to you or you've heard good things about it doesn't mean that gun is right for everyone. Instead of trying to figure out what gun is best for him let him decide what gun is best for himself. She should offer to take him to a local gun shop and let him browse for what gun within that price range strikes his fancy the most.

The coupon idea is good, but I think it would be more sentimental for them to make a trip to the gun store together and spend some time there picking out the perfect gun together.

Since your brother works for a dealer, why not have a conversation with him about what your brother might fancy in a .40 S&W. It should be easy enough for the dealer to find out, and then you could order it from him. Also check with CDNN for H&Ks, CZs, and SIGs in that caliber.

The SIG is a good choice, as well as the S&W M&P. Some CZ75 models also come in this caliber, but .40 models have more reports of functioning problems than the 9mm they were originally designed for. For a carry gun I would seriously look at a P-06 (a .40-caliber P-01 as shown here), virtually the same size and weight as the SIG P229.

My intent was that they would go to the shop together. Even better if they end up with "His" and "Hers".

Talk to his co-workers to see what he's been "fondling" lately. (secretively of course)
HECK...(i can say HECK...right?) I'd be happy with ANY handgun..(or long gun!) my "OTHER" gave me as a gift.

Chipperman is right. Give him a coupon and a ride to the gun store.

+1

Trying to buy a man a gun is like trying to buy shoes for a woman. Even if you think you are right you'll almost surely be dead wrong!

Well this goes the other way around too hehe (don't want separate Springmom and her guns now!)

I like the coupon idea but she wants to surprise him and get him an actual gift to hand over on the day. I'm really leaning towards the M&P for him now they've got 2 kids so I'm sure the safety features will appeal to her. do you think the full size is carryable? I'm going to have to go take a look at one and see if it'd be up his alley.

I definitely agree with this and i know he will too. she used to be totally against the idea and now we've converted her. I hadn't thought of the M&P and it's definitely on the radar now. Thanks for all the help everyone

She should have a range day with her husband. Some good bonding time as well as trying out a few options in their price range:

Glock 17/19
Springfield Armory XD-9
SIG P226 (CPO)
S&W M&P 9
CZ-75
Browning Hi-Power
Springfield Armory Mil-spec 1911

He may love the gesture, but not necessarily the handgun. Tell her to forget the idea of being able to hand him the gift and let him shop for it himself. He will still love her for it and get exactly what he wants.

Well, if it is going to be HIS, he has to buy it in his name. The coupon is a good idea. Or, just give him a card with the money/check inside.

I bet it won't take him long to get to the gun store!

As stated above, this isn't true. The form asks...

Are you the actual buyer of the firearm(s) listed on this form? Warning: You are not the actual buyer if you are acquiring the firearm(s) on behalf of another person. If you are not the actual buyer, the dealer cannot transfer the firearm(s) to you. (See Important Notice 1 for actual buyer definition and examples.)

Notice 1 states...

For purposes of this form, you are the actual buyer if you are purchasing the firearm for yourself or otherwise acquiring the firearm for yourself (for example, redeeming the firearm from pawn/retrieving it from consignment). You are also the actual buyer if you are acquiring the firearm as a legitimate gift for a third party. ACTUAL BUYER EXAMPLES: Mr. Smith asks Mr. Jones to purchase a firearm for Mr. Smith. Mr. Smith gives Mr. Jones the money for the firearm. Mr. Jones is NOT the actual buyer of the firearm and must answer “no “ to question 12a. The licensee may not transfer the firearm to Mr. Jones. However, if Mr. Brown goes to buy a firearm with his own money to give to Mr. Black as a present, Mr. Brown is the actual buyer of the firearm and should answer “yes” to question 12a.

Smith & Wesson is having a rebate special on their autoloaders. Buy one and get $30 back or two extra magazines. (I don't know if Smiths still come with two mags, but if they do, make sure you get a total of four mags; otherwise, the $30 back is probably a better deal.)

Give him a gift certificate for what you have. I love Sig's 229's in .40 cal. Please remind him that a layaway is okay since a new one is going to cost more than $600. It will help protect you and family members, so how can you put a price on that?

Maybe the guy has something picked out in his head already-Gift certificate is the best option. It would be a shame to spend that kind of money to NOT get what you want.
