Be nice if they had the high luster stock of the American Classic and the Monte Carlo stock of the Euro-Classic

remington mod 700 mountain rifle in 30-06, and don't look back. This gun is beautifully crafted, well built, durable and in -06, it can do anything, anywhere.

If which rifle had the high luster stock of the American Classic? Tikka, Winchester? The M70 Sporter's got pretty nice wood although it almost looks more like a satin finish (click to zoom in on the portion of the butt): http://www.winchesterguns.com/products/catalog/imagepreview.asp?mid=535108#center

As stated in my first post, I am not looking at 700s... I need a change of pace and this whole safety issue is a bit irritating.

Thanks for all the input,

Wes

I'd look at the Savage line of rifles, and the Zeiss Conquest is the way to go for a scope in that price range, no questions about it. It blows the Bushnell 4200 or the Leupold VX-II out of the water.

Savage...hands down....more gun for the money...Then buy a good scope...Amazing how in this country so many folks will spend a bundle on a good rifle, and then put cheap optics on it....

For the versions that I would want, the Savage and Winchester aren't too far off in price:

I agree about the scope. I certainly don't want sub-par optics, but I believe that for many scopes you're paying a lot for the name. I was born and raised a Leupold guy and thought I'd have nothing else on my rifles but, after fairly extensive research, I've decided to look at other makes as well. One company that has really piqued my interest is Sightron and their SII Big Sky scopes: http://www.sightron.com/index.php?action=view_document&did=1201816362&cat_id=15&id=11 . I was quite interested in the Bushnell Elite 4200, but it's hard for me to get past the just over 3" of eye relief. Zeiss has 4", Leupold has about 4", Nikon has about 4", and Sightron has about 4".

My advice is to keep your eye on the used gun rack, I recentle purchased a an old Sears JC Higgins 243 with a mauser action with a Balvar scope for 350.00, There are some great deals on some great rifles out there.

Hey guys first post.....

I was in the same position you were except I was wanting to trade in a package savage I bought 5 years ago. Found out I loved hunting and after buying a bow and ML wanted to upgrade my rifle. My local store, had Ruger M77 Hawkeye stainless for $492.00. The store took my savage for $200 trade. I got a .270 win M77 hawkeye for $292.00. Just ordered a Leupold VXII from Cabelas as well. Should be in next week and hope to have mounted same day by gunsmith, Just another option to look at is the Rugers. Good hunting and god bless! So I got a new gun and scope for $592.00.

I have a M70 FW 270win. and a M70 Sporter 25-06rem., the FW would be my choice for carrying in rough country after elk.

The 7mm-08 and 270 are both excellent Texas hunting cartridges, and still very capable out west.

The Buda Cabela's store had a "slightly" used Winchester M70 Featherweight 7mm-08 on the used rack a week or so ago. Just saying. ;)

Are your M70s the new FN built ones? I've really, really, got my heart set on a new Winchester Model 70, but the few bad reviews scare me a bit. I definitely see more good reviews than bad ones, but some complain about the new MOA trigger system and some claim that theirs isn't accurate enough. Others claim that they love the MOA trigger and that it's one of the most accurate rifles they've ever shot. Do you guys think I'm worrying about nothing and that I should just buy the darn rifle? It's hard to find a single bad thing about that Tikka T3 but it seems so cold compared to the good old American made model 70 with a Walnut stock.

Thanks,

Wes

If which rifle had the high luster stock of the American Classic?

Savage. I am saying I would like to see a Savage 14/114 with a high luster stock and also a Monte Carlo comb/cheek piece.

The American Classic has a high luster stock and the Euro-Classic has a satin stock with Monte Carlo comb

Mine are all pre 2006.
I wouldn't have bought one of the first new ones of the line, but by now they should have worked all the bugs out, I say go for it.

I've got my eye on the new Extreme Weather model.

model 70 fn winchesters

I own three new winchester extremes in 300wsm 325wsm and 30-06 all are tack drivers and well designed and built.also two supergrades in 270 win and 300wsm also featherlight in 270wsm.no problems with any of them and in my opinion best buy for the money. check out there website, and put your hands on one in you local gun store, you will not be disappointed, regards marc

The Buda Cabela's store had a "slightly" used Winchester M70 Featherweight 7mm-08 on the used rack a week or so ago. Just saying.

That would be sweet.

I currently hunt with an old Remington 700 BDL in .243 and I want something different, so no 700s! I've been racking my brain with this decision so any input you guys could offer would be appreciated. :banghead:

Wes

What about sending your gun to McGowen and having them put a 7mm-08 or .308 barrel on it?

For <$300 you get a rifle that can go many more places than the .243.

http://www.mcgowenbarrel.com/catalog3.htm

$220 for a Rem 700 re-barrel.

Hi,

It sounds like you're getting good advice and have a good chance to be very satisified with whatevery you choose in the 270 through 308 range in a Savage, Icon, Winchester, Remington, etc..

I just wanted to let you know that I've recently purchased an Icon at a good price and then the rebate turned it into a great price. Even with shipping and transfer fees Icons are being won on Gunbroker for less than $600, that's $450 after rebate. That's a great deal for a very good rifle. The action feels like a bank vault and the 60 degree lift is very convenient.

Good luck and I don't think you'll go wrong with any of the options presented but I wanted to let you know you could get an Icon for a lower price than you might have thought if you look around.

By the way, I was able to get one of the special run Icons in 7mm-08 with Weathersheild and a fancy walnut laminate stock. SWEET if I do say so myself.

Dan

Thanks for all the help guys. When I say that I hunt with a Model 700, that does not mean I own a 700; it's my father's rifle. He does basically let me keep it like it belongs to me, but I can't really modify it. Time for me to be a big boy and buy my own deer rifle, haha!
