I went and did it. I bought a Liberty Colonial 50 gun safe (RSC). I'd spent years pining over safes, comparing incomparable stat sheets, saving pennies...

Finally I settled on the big Liberty, huge, 1000 lbs, decent protection, and about $2000. Just got it delivered, and bolted it into the concrete. It's like a monolith in my gun room. Last night I pulled all of my firearms out of their hiding spots, behind doors, bookshelves, kitchen cupboards, attic, etc. Now they are all inside the safe... And the safe is 'comfortably' full. Some Tetris will be necessary to fit more guns/ammo inside.

It's a very calming feeling to have my babies in a safe finally.

FYI, don't ever try a Harbor Freight hammer drill for a concrete slab.

When I first got married, my wife liked to travel a lot. I was a little freaked out about leaving my guns home for a week at a time. I finally bought a safe and have slept well ever since. I bought a 60 gun model, planning ahead. Well, it has become necessary to add to it since then.

When I moved into my house and had to take my first week long trip for work, I grew concerned about not having proper security for my guns and a few other valuables. Being of VERY modest means at the time I had two concerns:

-The small collection of guns I had at the time, my laptop, plus my tools & tool box represented, outside of my house & car, the largest part of my accumulated wealth. If they were stolen the loss would be very significant.

-I was working on a VERY tight budget

I ended up getting a non fire-rated Browning safe which was advertised to hold ~ 30 guns IIRC. It also had the benefit of fitting in the closet in my spare room. while loading my collection of about 1/2 the rated capacity, I discovered that safe manufacturers seem to consistently rate safes at 2-3 times what their actual capacity is. I fit them all in, but only after stripping out the shelves etc.. The safe served me well for quite a few years until a niggling worry at the back of my mind made me want storage with a fire rating. What I ended up with is a Liberty 35 that seems to be something of a hybrid between a Franklin & a Lincoln. At over 900 lbs it was a beast to move, but it does impart a certain peace of mind. Alas, even though I bought bigger than I needed at the time this safe is at pretty close to maximum capacity. So any further additions to my collection need to carefully weighed.

Good luck on that nice new safe, I applaud your sacrifice and dedication to being a responsible gun owner.
