I went hog hunting this past weekend without any sucess whatsoever. There was plenty of sign of them rooting around in the area, but no pigs.

Are feral hogs like deer in that they feed at night and in the morning for the most part, and lay low during the day, or do they feed throughout the day?

Also, what have you had luck with, bait wise, for those of you who do?

stinky underwear.

Sour corn and dieseled corn. rotten veggies are good too.

An old creosote telephone pole in the area draws attention too.

Bury the corn in several layers of dirt and corn, dirt then corn, ect to keep them comming back to the same spot.

You might like stalking better.

Mix in some powdered strawberry jello with corn. They love that. Smells just like a bait product called Hog Wild. Hmmm... Layer it like fisherman said with the lowest layer a couple of feet deep. They'll root on it for days.

On our leases, few have had much luck stand hunting during the day even with changing out baits. About the only time they've been popped has been at early morning and dusk, while deer hunting  . Now, bring out the dogs and it's a different story!

saw some guys

use a post hole digger to get the sour/diesel corn deeper forcing the hogs to root for it.

... what the heck is dieseled corn?

As the name suggests (I know it's hard to believe); it is corn mixed with a small amount of diesel fuel.

We have a couple oil pumps and leaky tanks (the company has since cleaned the mess up after threat to call the EPA - mineral rights agreement previous to purchasing the property) on our property. The hogs tend to congregate around those areas. They have also knocked down a corn spreader. We built barbed wire fences around all feeders since then.

yeah

what i've been told is adding a little diesel to the sour mix keeps the lesser varmit (coon & deer) from eating the corn but does not stop the hogs, they seem to like it.

damn, it seems like going to a bar for a brewskie sans wedding ring attracts hogs :what:

and some cute ones occasionally too

caveat - I worked for years in a shop where we couldn't wear jewelry around lathes, milles, etc so the ring sat in a drawer. After several years, my fingers became mucho gordo, and I would have to have it resized.

Not really trying to attract 'em they just kinda show up at the deer feeder and help themselves to the corn. On the plus side, I have more pork than congress

Try hunting with dogs

Leave your guns at home and hookup with some guys that hunt hogs with dogs. To describe it in 1 word "AWESOME". Catch a rank old bore with a bulldog and your bare hands after your Kerr dogs bay him up. Nothing makes you fell more alive than feeling like you might be fixing to die.

Bulldogs forever !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
