affirmative on the mercury. I get it from the junkyard, lots of old appliances had thermostatic mercury filled switches. If you know what you are looking for you can scrounge up a coffee cup full in a few hours. It works well for cleaning the metals out of the barrel not so much for the powder residue. I have stopped using mercury since I found foaming bore cleaner with copper remover, with foamy bore cleaner just fill the barrel up and put it muzzle down in the trash can a hour and an oily patch then back in the safe.

Does the foaming stuff work as good as the mercury? I too have found plenty of old mercury switches, and other than the hazards associated with exposure it seems pretty easy to do once in a blue moon.

I have to admit; I have gotten pretty lazy since foaming bore cleaner. think of it as a diluted oven cleaner...

personally i think bore cleaner works better. Mercury is a pain to work with because you have to clean the mercury after you finish trying not to spill it. You can clean it by slowly rolling it across newspaper.

Plus, foaming bore cleaner is a lot safer to use.

I hate to think of the mercury I absorbed as a kid playing with the stuff bare handed.

There was a recipe on a sniper country article I read years back in which you could mix striping agent and copper solvent for an overnight treatment which would require no bushing or further cleaning.. wish I remember names of the products that were used..

I feel your pain...............when I go down to the basement, by the time I get there, I've forgotten what I went for.

I'm not enjoying the aging process nearly as much as I thought I would.

For the record, mercury is incredibly poisonous to the environment. A drop can poison a lake long term. Dispose of responsibly.
