I hope no one is storing their guns in any case for more than one day.
What? You're kidding, right? What is your logic behind this? For those who can't afford a safe, I would be willing to bet they keep their guns in cases regularly, for extended periods of time far beyond one day. And I bet their guns are fine...

I always say, "never to store your guns in any case for more than one day". Sure, ideally it would be nice to have your guns stored in a gun safe, but that isn't always the case (no pund intended). Most people do not have gun safes, I tend to store a couple of my guns like this Remington 3200 and CVS Black Powder muzzle down up against the door jam. Door opens and closes just fine. Some people gently place their guns under the bed. Whatever the case, don't keep them in cases.

Before I could afford a gun safe, I stored no less than a dozen guns in cases, both hard and soft. All of 'em the el cheapo variety like Walmart usually sells. In 2 decades or so of this practice, I never had any damage. Of course, I used a little common sense like not putting them up cold and/or wet and always oiled them down before closing the case....Heck, right now there is about a dozen hand guns in my safe in pistol rugs.

I was in college for 3 years with a few guns that were stored in hard cases any time I was at school, and not shooting. This was in northern NY, in an unheated storage unit, and the guns (except on organized trap events) never even saw a heated building, or normally any type of cleaning.

Guess what? They are fine. Wipe down with an oily rag, or one of the silicone rags, and call it good.

Is it the best? No, but then again I'm riding around without a speedometer right now because my daily ride puked up it's speedo cable. (at least I hope that is all that is wrong) I still need to get to work, however I still ride the bike, and I deal with something not being perfect.

That said, right now the guns are leaning up in the closet, with the two I have use for in HD loaded.

::EDIT:: As for storing them in the storage unit, There was no way I was storing guns outside of some sort of case, as they shared tight quarters with all kinds of things, from spare tires/wheels, tools, bulky things, and even an ironing board, way to much crowding and gunk to leave guns uncased.

I fail to understand the logic of going for lowest price to case your prized firearms. Would seem to make more sense to give them the best protection regardless of price. The best I've found are the Boyt leather cases with fleece lining.

If I had a bunch of money to burn I might go for a a little better. Then again I might not. I just can't justify $180-$200 for a case when the cheapies I get at walmart or bass pro on sale do the job just fine. Ive never hurt a gun while it was in the case. I'd rather save all that money and get another gun.

The leather ones do look prettier though.

I primarily transport long guns in a Fender Stratocaster soft guitar case.
The neighbors know I play in a bar band, but they don't need to know when I transport firearms.

For transport to the range, yes. But I learned the hard way not to use them for longer term storage. My wife kept her SKS in one for several months. I went to open it up and it had surface rust all over the place. Most of it came off with some CLR and elbow grease, but there are still some remnants of that damage. Fortunately, it was just a cheap SKS and not my Marlin or something else I really care about.

Of course, that house also had pretty serious humidity and mildew issues. Thank god I got outta there. Not sure I'd have the same problem where I'm at now.

Well, I do this because I have guns, not prized firearms. The only time they are in a case is when I toss them in the back of my pickup to go to the range.

Also, I keep them secured in a locked closet where they can breath. The only other thing in the closet is my hunting clothes in black plastic laundry bags and plastic bins.

Those of you saying there is damage, are you referring to hard cases or soft cases? It makes a difference. Hard cases directly expose the firearm to foam. Foam, as anyone knows, breaks down over time and releases chemicals, especially the cheap kind of suspect manufacture. They're also more or less sealed. However, soft cases have an insulating layer of cloth in between and the exterior fabric can breathe. I have used both hard and soft cases, and I have never had any damage. This includes a well-abused (in service) Arisaka 99 that was stored in an old hard case for a few years. All I've got are cases. I can't afford a safe.

Blackhawk's Weapon Transport case is fantastic. Lightweight, holds a shotgun and AR, has outside compartments for a sidearm, and can fold out into a shooting mat...yeah it's pretty awesome.

WardenWolf,

The damage I spoke of above was definitely a soft case. While it can breathe somewhat, it's also true that fabric can retain moisture. Whatever the case, I can only tell you what happened. Clean firearm went in, rusty firearm came out. Won't ever go there again.
