I was lucky enough to go with my Mom to the local Marine PX and saw this knife at the sporting goods counter. The salesperson let me look at it and to my amazement, the lockblade flew out of the handle. It's spring loaded and according to SOG, perfectly legal. I'm still trying to find out about Cali law but I bought it immediately. Anyone else seen these? Opinions?

You can see them here:

SOG Flash II

Sure beats me how they can be Kali legal... what is the difference between an "assisted opening" knife and a "spring operated" knife?

It's spring loaded. I'm going to ask one of my SDPD friends. I did buy it on a Marine base (I was back in America for a few hours).:D

They are perfectly legal in California. I forget the details, but if you want them ask Jim March. it has something to do with a "bias toward closure" or something like that.

My friend has a flash 1. We all carry knives, and for the rest of us the minimum length is 3 inches. So we endlessly tease him about his inadequate length :D . But the Flash 1 is a very good utility or gentlemans knife.

It's been great but I think that it's getting gummed up as a carry knife. The spring doesn't sprung if it's been in the pocket for a day or two. Except for that, thumbs up. Oh, thanks for the information regarding Jim's web site.
