Hi all, SOG www.southernohiogun.com apparently has some Nazi-marked Luger P08s in stock. They're selling for $639, with a $25 hand-select option.

Has anyone here ordered one? SOG says they're in very good condition, but I've read some complaints on other forums about mismatched numbers, pitting, rust, etc. $639 would be a lot for a Luger with mismatched parts.

I'm trying to decide whether to take the plunge on one of them. I have a P08 shooter, but wouldn't mind one in excellent shape with all matching numbers. Also, how good is SOG about returns if I'm not happy with what I get? Would a replacement gun still have to go through my FFL?

Thanks!

My old man has ordered from SOG a few times. He says their quality control is less than ideal, but they're very reasonable about returns. It's sort of the luck of the draw, apparently. You might get something that's a true gem, or you might not. If the latter is the case, we've never had problems making exchanges.

If you're into WW2 guns, I'd strongly suggest getting a C&R license; they can be mailed right to your front door that way.

I ordered a HK P9S from them recently. Threw the extra $20 for "hnad pick" and seemed to get just that. The box was rough but numbered to the gun. The gun however was all of 95% as were both mags. The dealer I went through had said he had always had very good service from them.

No complaints about SOG here either. I ordered a nice Brno straight pull 22LR rifle from them back in December and was happy to get a brand new product. Just wondering if these Lugers are worth the $639 SOG is asking. I got a very nice 1918 P-08 from aimsurplus a few years ago for about $330. Some folks on another forum were complaining that they had received a well worn out Luger despite the $25 handpick option.

Any Luger, refinished or not, in the condition SOG is offering is worth what they are asking.
SOG return policy is pretty good too.
If you don't like the gun, send it back for an exchange or refund.

They've had this batch for a little while. I remember when they got their first batch just after the new year, they sold out in a day. I think there was like 60 if them in the first batch.

IMO it's not a very good price for mismatched numbers. Somebody said an SOG rep said they are numbers matching, but most have said the numbers don't match.

Ok, I've just called SOG about these Lugers. Most of these P08s don't have matching numbers (some do, most don't) and have been "redipped" in blueing. $639 for a shooter rather than a low-end collector, is too much, so I'll pass.

These sound like the Soviet-captured guns brought into the country 4-5 years ago.

I got one of those for about $375. All matching except the side plate. Lots of pitting in the barrel, but it shot great -- very accurate. Lots of pitting under the grips, too.

Many little things wore out over the next few years, and I finally traded it away. But by that time it was a refurbished gun and in good shape. The novelty had just worn off, for me. I sometimes wish I had kept it.

But $650 for a gun that might be in the same condition? No way.

They're not really worth the price. I've seen a few and they are mismatched. Also they have a huge importer marking that looks like a banner on the Luger. if you really want a shooting luger, or just always wanted one, that's still a good buy, but they're not worth collecting.

I have ordered from SOG dozens of times and have had no problems ever!. If they say "Very Good", then it's NRA - Very Good.
Needless to say - what you are paying for is the Nazi proofs on those firearms, so you must ask yourself if it's worth it.

Members of various C&R forums and lists generally give SOG good marks, but almost universally say that SOG grades their weapons a little higher than most think appropriate. Their G/VG might be F/G elsewhere. No real complaints about service, etc.

Its getting harder and harder to find "shooter" Lugers, so their prices may become the "norm." Personally, I think they're high on these guns, from the descriptions given.

I have 2 friends that ordered the surplus Lugers as shooters and they were happy. Actually, now that I think about it, I think they got them from AIM Surplus, but they were pretty much the same deal as SOG has.

They have no collector value (besides the fact that, yes they are real Lugers), but they are good for plinking.

I wouldn't count on any matching numbers, unless you went hand select, and even then I wouldn't count on all matching numbers. Remember, on the Lugers they put a serial number (or at least the last two digits) on almost every little part, not just the frame and slide.

Mine is a S/42 WW2 bringback (Grandpa snuck it back in the hull of a ship after the war) with an even "00" sn stamped on everything all the way down to the magazine. It even has the original holster and breakdown tool to go with it. I've thought about buying one of the surplus Lugers to be able to shoot, because mine obviously doesn't get much range time. :)
