SOG Terminus XR any good?

I have one. It is OK for the money but not my favorite. If you are looking for a bar lock there are many options out there now. D2 is not a true stainless and difficult to sharpen, so not my choice for folks not into knives. If you are wanting to buy from Midway, the Rat series of folders is good, as is the Ka-bar Dozier. You may want to check out the CJRB Feldspar, Ria or Maileah; Sencut Sachse for a button lock, or their Actium or Scepter for liner locks.

I've got a few SOG folders. They're not bad choices if you get them on sale. Picked up the last incarnation of the Trident in D2 steel when Midway had a really good sale price on 'em. The overall quality is good for the price.

I don't find the D2 that difficult to sharpen, though I agree with @rust collector it might not be the best choice for anyone who's not into knives, but again, I don't think it's a bad choice. I tend to give away knives like the Kershaw Leek (a personal favorite "budget" knife) or Spyderco Delica/Endura (at a little higher price point) to start family off and show them how to sharpen 'em.

When looking at knives for folks who aren’t knife people, aesthetics also play a big roll, imo. I think the Civivi Banter and Elementum are both worth a look amongst other “modern” designs. Also, depending on the person, more traditional designs are worth considering. Knives such as the classic Buck and Case offerings may suit such folks in a similar price range. Good luck!

Ka-bar Dozier is my all time favorite for the money. Simple style, great size, light weight, locks tight and slices paper out of the box.
