I was poking around SOG's site earlier this evening, and came across their S&W 76s. They look like they'd make a good plinker/ HD carbine, but this is yet another gun I know almost nothing about.

Turning to my most preferred source of gun info, Max Popenker's site, the most I could figure out was that they're based on the Carl Gustaf M/45. However, the original uses a stamped receiver, and SOG's offering has a milled one. Might they also be modified to take Sten mags? Annoyingly, SOG doesn't say. I know the originals could use Suomi drums, but who knows about these... ?

Can SW76 mags even be found anymore for 'em? What about Suomi drums? Would this be a better, cheaper "fun gun" than a Vector Arms semi Uzi, or not?
Reliability/ accuracy/ ease of use/ ease of disassembly/ parts availability/ etc?

Thanks in advance for info on this as well... :)

Still nothing yet, although I saw a gunbroker auction for mags... that cost ~$50.00. :uhoh: Would an Uzi be better? (Kel Tec subs are too flimsy for my taste)

Well, I'll try to give some info b/c you're getting nothing so far.

Mag price and availability goes to the Uzi, hands down. Ease of maintenance and parts availability also goes to the Uzi.

The only SW 76 I've ever fired was full-auto, so I don't know how this one is. In full-auto, Uzis are much better to fire and control. The SW trigger was horrible, but that was open bolt. The semi-auto must have a closed bolt, so the trigger may be better.

I think if I were to get either of these in semi-suto, I'd choose the Uzi over this one.

YMMV. :)

There has been a thread on this recently over at www.ak-47.net where a couple members bought them. Mags are modified Suomi. Reports were they ran fine with good ammo. One guy had a reload blow up on him, but no trouble with factory stuff. You might look over there under general weapons discussion and see what they said. I would prefer the Vector UZI, but then again it is a couple hundred higher and does not cause flashbacks of watching the movie Omega Man when I was a kid.

:D

:) :)

The maybe Good News is that Suomi mags can be altered to fit a S&W 76 easily so should be able to be fitted to the SOGs.

:( :(

The bad news is that Tapco is out of their stock of cheap (used to be about $3) Suomi Mags.

Check by phone, their website did not have any for sale.
