Have seen a a web site or two advertising this and also use to see at Wallyworld. Anyone else ever tried one? They go for about $90-$100 each and have standard adjustable floods (2) attached to solar panel unit (about 6" x 6"). I thought one or two would be nice to mount on 2nd floor window sills or porches with the ability to randomly reposition. What I don't know is how bright, how long (web site says 90 seconds illum after motion detector is triggered), and how many repeat triggerings it's capable of on a full charge. This might be the ticket for hard to wire locations and/or power outages...

You might want to check the wattage on those, 2X7 and 1X10 watts, respectivly. If you're able to install a little wiring then you are better off using floods run from house power and keeping the solars for low level wayfinding. Run the power from the attick and mount the lights and motion sensors on roof overhangs looking down.

2x7W seems like something you would use to iluminate stairs or something, not for security lighting.

I have a dual system in my back yard.
Two 500W lights, both with motion detectors. They are wired so that if one is triggered, both lights turn on.
This 1000W system has proven itself with scaring away burglars. There was tracks in the snow once. They turned around and into the neighbours yard, where they did in fact break in.

Lights work!

Thanks for the replies. I already have motion floods wired into household current. Also have those little decorative solar powered garden lights for illuminating sidewalks, shrubs, and gnomes. WHAT I AM WONDERING IS: HAS ANYONE HAD ANY EXPERIENCE WITH SOLAR POWERED SECURITY FLOOD LIGHTS (TRIGGERED BY MOTION DETECTORS)? I would like as a backup to normal lighting, as a backup to short term power outage, and for the ability to randomly change the lighting pattern around the home.

Yep - I have them on my house. We live out in the country, and make our own electricity (Solar & Wind). In addition I have one of these stand alone systems. It works great, lights up the area, runs off the critters. In fact, after a viloent hail storm, I noticed about 1/2 of the solar panel was missing (smashed). The unit still works. Three screws and you are all set.
I reccomend them. Why run wires?

I bought one at Home Depot for approx. $90 around 5 years back when having some vandalism probs just inside a rather distance driveway entrance. I was rather disappointed in the amount of light it put out. But, it did at least come on to indicate movement in an area where it would have been quite a hassle to run wiring.

Solar unit worked OK for a couple of years, then quit for reasons unknown. Vandals moved on and I've not yet bothered to repair, remove or replace it. Subsequently-installed conventional 300 to 500 watters now start coming on in sequence and seem to be much more effective for our purposes.
