Bought it used about 2 yers ago with a 2.5" bbl. paid 350 for it plus tax. No internal lock and hogue finger groove grip. sold it a year ago and missed the hell out of it. started looking to replace it, and I either gave it away for the 350 I had in it or they have gone WAY UP:what:

man i hate selling a good gun, ony to find out ow stupid it was. worse yet, sold it to buy my first glock, but just had to have it. ok bitch session over.:cuss:

I regret selling most of the guns I have sold, for one reason or another.

I still sell a few, sold two this past year, but I don't regret selling them as they were bought with an eye towards "Trading Material".

I think it's one of the marks of the "real" gun enthusiast. If you haven't sold a gun and then regretted it, you haven't been doing this for very long...

The mark of the truly devoted? You sold a gun and then later bought it back.

Join the club...today I was regretting having let go of a nice a 2'' COLT Lawman. "You live ....you learn."

Not to make you feel worse, but my 2.5" M66 is probably one of the last guns I'd part with....I'm that fond of it.

- regards

Know the feeling. I miss quite a few that were foolishly sold or traded in years past.

New rule for me is no selling or trading Smiths, Rugers, Brownings or Colts. Same applies to any rifle or shotgun that's been good to me when hunting. The "rule" was made when my first son was born. He's going to be a lucky man in about 30-40 years. (at least I hope it's that long)

Two years ago that was a fair price. They have gone up that much since then. $475 or $500 is a good price now for a very nice one.

I sold a 66 a while back...

...and I kick myself so hard some times I leave bruises.

GUNKWAZY, you have an addiction problem.

You must find a support group, to help you find more that is.:neener:

Fine looking M66's.

I sympathize with you. The good news is that there are still many 2.5" 66's available on the auction boards. Some are NIB, or LNIB.

In any case you get a superior revolver to the "new" S&W's, that still costs less!

I'm wearing my 2.5" 66-2 as I type this. I'll never let it go. I learn from my mistakes ;).

Good luck with your search! TJ

Don't beat yourself up. I did the exact same thing about a dozen years ago with the same gun.
I think I paid $200 for the gun and a Bianchi thumb-snap holster and sold it 6 months later for $255. Big $55 profit. Whooo Hoooo !!! Sure wish I had it back, along with the Steyr GB , the Colt Commander 70 Series, etc, etc.
It just goes with the territory.

Some guns are just classic and will remain desirable. I recently purchased a 66-1 (4" barrel) from an auction site (for too much money), but it's not hard to rationalize that its value will always continue to increase. Meanwhile, it will be a source of much pleasure at the range.

Yeah, I don't get it. S&W could re-introduce the 66 in 2.5", do it the right way w/o a lock and with a cylinder stud, one piece barrel. They could sell them all day at $650/$700, which is more than the "street price" of most of their non-PC revolver catalog.

I heard storiess like this for years when I was a kid growing up and when I was old enough to buy for myself I had one rule about Any firearm I ever purchase.

#1: It will stay with me until the day that I die and it is turned over to a family member at which point they can do whatever they wish with it.

I will never , EVER sell a firearm that I purchase. I don't buy alot but when I do, it's for a purpose, and that purpose will never change. It may be modified slightly but the general purpose is still the same. There may be other firearms that serve the same general purpose, but I will alway own the firearms that I have bought and they will only go away when I do.

Saves me alot of regret.

Double that rule for a 3" Model 66 !!!

An extra 1/2-inch never meant so much.

Extra-special sweet ...

Gosh, now I want to go back down to visit my parents just to see if that 66 is still there... I guess I'll be content with the NIB 4" 66 I'll be inheriting from my dad one day, but that's not as much consolation as you might think.

1st S&W Commandment - Thou Shall Not Sell A Model 66 2 1/2

You must be reading from the book of Mormon or something. The first rule among all handgunners:

1st, Have a gun. (e.g., don't bring a knife to a gun fight, etc.)

2nd - dont' ever sell a S&W snubbie. 2" J, 2" k, 2.5" K, it doesn't matter. Don't do it unless the law is demanding the money. They are too precious, just go up in value, and they just don't make them like they used to. I found this wayward 3.5" N 357 from 1970 this weekend and am now giving it a good home. I view it as my own personal "gun buy back program." I find good guns in bad neighborhoods and take them in. I think I might start claiming a tax break on this charitable activity...

1st S&W Commandment - Thou Shall Not Sell A Model 66 2 1/2

Count me in as another who has broken that Commandment! Well actually I traded it! Back in the mid 1990s (when I traded) the 66s were easy to find and I did not think anything of it. Today they command a premium!

Luckily I was able to pick up a 66-1 last year. It is a 4" but one of the pinned /recessed guns and I was glad to get it at $400.

So the new Commandment - (for me) Thou Shall NOT Sell or Trade My 4" 66-1!
