I will be taking the Oklahoma Concealed Carry class on the 11th of this month at Tulsa Firearms. To all of you that has taken the CCW class, what does the shooting qualification consist of in general? What shooting distances etc.? I will be taking the course with my Springfield XD 40 Service Model. Will I need to take along a couple of concealed holsters? Any information you can give me is greatly appreciated.

when i took it we shot from 3 and 7 yards. no holster, started with gun in hand. no qualifing score you just have to show you can handle and fire it safely. saddlebum

Thanks for the reply saddlebum. I had heard that one class had you speed draw with 2 shots center mass and 1 in the head. At 25 and 40 yards. This was another state so I wasnt for sure if this was the standard or not. Did you take yours at Tulsa Firearms or somewhere else?

When I took mine here in Utah, we spent one hour on the range. no holsters were needed. We all shot a full clip of a semi-auto and a revolver. We had to show the gun as empty and show how we knew it was empty (open slide, check barrell, no brass in barrel), load the gun, chamber it, take the safety off, empty a full magazine in a target set at a comfortable distance. They trainer told us that a large percentage of encounters happen within 5 to 7 yards, so we set the targets at about distance. Ater firing we had to put the safety on, lock the slide open, to show that the chamber was empty, and drop the magazine out.

For revolvers we had to put the bullets in the spinny thing, click that thing into the chamber, fire the bullets, than take the spinny thing out. (I'm not a fan of revolvers so I didn't pay much attention to the specific words used, since I don't plan on owning one. But now I know how to fire one if I need to).

WHAT?

speed draw with 2 shots center mass and 1 in the head. At 25 and 40 yards

:uhoh: :uhoh: :what:

Man, I'd rather mess with the paperwork in California or some other hatefull state than try to prove that I can 'speed draw' and then Mozambique someone at 40 yards!!!!!!

And to think they let me have a gun here in Washington.

Not sure about OK, but KY required 11 of 20 shots hit full-size silhouette target at 20 ft. IIRC, I think I kept mine to a 3.5in group COM. -No where close to the edge.

Anyone who would fail KYs shooting test shouldn't be shooting a gun! They are not looking for marksmen. They are looking to see if you are SAFE and you know the basics of how to hold, aim, and fire your gun.

Hmmmm.

Place UNLOADED gun on tray.
Load when directed (keeping gun facing downrange).
(Keep finger out of trigger guard until directed to fire at target.)
Fire at target when directed.
Place 11 of 20 shouts on target. (REALLY EASY at this distance.)
Take written (open book!) test. (if you SOMEHOW fail, they will "counsel you" and let it retake it immediately!)

Go home and wait for certificate in mail.

Most people feel a bit of pressure any time they test, but from what I have seen it won't matter. Just relax... you would have to try really hard to mess this up!

I had heard that one class had you speed draw with 2 shots center mass and 1 in the head. At 25 and 40 yards.
:what: WHOA! This HAD to come from a "special" advanced class. Most ranges won't even LET you quick-draw! I seriously doubt that ANY CCW class would require that.

I suggest you call the range that will be doing your CCW and ask them what they require for their shooting "test". - Then go to the range and practice that very thing until you are very comfortable with it.

GOOD LUCK! (But I really don't think you'll need it!)

yes i took it at tulsa firearms on garnett. we only loaded 5 rounds at a time and fired at 3 and 7 yards. with what ever gun you brought. btw if you take the class with a revo. you can only carry a revo. if you take it with a semi auto you can carry semi, revo, or derringer. saddlebum

Thank you all for the responses. The state in question was Texas...in the New Braunfels area. Now, I dont know if this was an advanced class or not, but I take it that it wasnt since I asked what the individual had to go thru to qualify during the CCW shooting test.

 I thought the fast draw 2 center 1 head at 25 and 40 was a little out of the ordinary. Thanks again.

In Texas you do NOT speed draw and fire! you do fire 50rds at various distences starting at 3yrds and finishing I believe at 20yrds, Texas may be the old west but they still wont let you speed draw:D

When I took mine, it was 5 shots at a time ,25 total at 3yrds, 25 at 7 yrds. No scoring. One elderly gentleman passed the class and only managed to put 5 out of 50 shots on the target. Said it was okay because he only wanted to scare them off anyway.:what:

At 40yrds, I would need a scope on my carry peice. Hard to say it was self defense when you're beaning folks at 40yrds.

I think most of our range time was spent at the 5 yd. line. Only five shots from 15 yds. and five from 2 yds. When we finished, the instructor commented (paraphrased)..."those of you that scored under 80% you don't impress me...go practice, and you that scored 100%, you don't impress me...you're not shooting fast enough." I just made SURE I passed. Figured I'd practice the fast, hard stuff after I got the certificate.:D

Yeah Smoke I hear ya.
I shot my target of 36 rds at 7 yds from low ready the day before the course and paper drill. I knew I had to leave early as soon as the course was over . So on the range...Gunsmith buddy instructor "Dang it, we can't submit playing cards, 3" post it notes, head shots only on a teddy, Barney is a no no, and forget about that one with the "smilie face" this ain't Lethal Weapon and you ain't Riggs"

"Now this here is a silhouette, you think you can run 36 rds from low ready like normal folks from 7 yds...and why don't you 'pull' a few...sheesh blow out the center only and , well just miss a little bit - OK? :)

I shot one mag weak hand only to get his goat and to well, I wanted the practice. :D

CumminsPower, relax, you'll do fine. Have fun, take notes, ask questions.

btw, my wife took the class with me. she had only fired her gun 4 times prior to the class, after the class we score the targets just for fun and she had out shoot the entire class including me. saddlebum

When I took the class (FL) we only had to fire one shot. It didn't matter what we hit as long as it wasn't the instructor. The lady in front of me couldn't do it and had to set the gun down, step back and wait a minute before she finally mustered up the courage to shoot one round of .38 special from a GP-100. I couldn't believe it. I wonder if she is carrying.

My instructor advised against head shots.
I didn't listen to him.

You're lucky, my instructor said he'd fail us if he saw us intentionally shoot the target's head...no smiley faces or anything like that, but a flyer or 2 was ok.

my instructor said he'd fail us if he saw us intentionally shoot the target's head

hmmmmm.....I really don't think he has the authority to do that. He has to score the target as the shots hit. Head shots count.

You can actually fly all your shots after you leave the 7 yard line and pass easily.

Not to downplay the importance of a "real" CCW class, but if you're concerned about the shooting part, why not get a Florida CWL? They will accept a VERY wide range of training classes, including the Oklahoma Hunter Safety course, which is free....no shooting required at all for that one! The license is accepted in OK, and you end up with several more states reciprocity than you do with the OK license.

I think in the end, I wound up saving about 40 bucks, and have the same benefit as the OK license. Something to think about! :)

I took the NRA Personal Protection Course to qualify for my CCW permit in Colorado, I don't remember the exact details but it was all slow fire, center of mass on a full size silhouette. If you can keep all of your shots inside a paper plate at 7 yards, you probably don't have anything to worry about.

By the way CrudeGT,

That spinny thing on a revolver is known as a cylinder;^)

Hey Cummins

I am also a TFTA graduate!:D
Like saddlebum said, 50 rnds. 3 and 7 yards. The morning session was all class work that was (yawn) ok. Then lunch, then the test, then range time. Be loose, stay safe, no problem. Took my permit 52 days to arrive from date of fingerprinting (July). Good luck and dont forget to peek in on OU - Texas!!

Draw and fire for CCW? We had people who had never fired the weapons they brought and could barely load the mags! We fired 6 rounds with each hand at 3 yds, 12 rounds at 7 yards and 12 rounds at 15 yds - and had people fail. Then when I went to add 2 guns to the CCW at another range, I only had to shoot at 3, 5 and 7 yards. Very easy stuff.

Took my permit 52 days to arrive from date of fingerprinting

Here in Vegas it took over the required-by-law 120 days! :cuss:

We all shot a full clip of a semi-auto and a revolver.

!

I used to think saying clip when you mean magazine was hinky enough, but this takes it to a whole new level...:scrutiny:

Sorry I didnt get back sooner. The class was good. Kind of boring. I did good. Scored a 15 out of 15 on the written. Only had 1 shot out of the Bullseye of the sillohette. That was on the 5 shots in 10 seconds. Had a little stray off about an inch out. Springfield XD 40 performed flawlessly. Forgot to send off for a packet from the OSBI so I will have to get it before I can go any further. Thank you guys for all the help.:D

Slightly off topic but, relevant I think.

Destroy your CCW test target. I have been told this by both my instructors and my lawyer of choice (in the horrible event of having a SD shooting). They told me it could be used against me, especially if the shot placement was good.
