Hello.

Over the summer, I tested several different bullet designs in .22LR and .22WMR. I cant remember if I posted them here, but here are the results.

All bullets were shot into soaked newspapers at a distance of <3 feet.

(sorry for the poor picture quality, but its better than a description)

From my Marlin 60 (which I believe has a 19 inch barrel).

This picture is of Winchester Xpert, CCI Velocitor, and CCI Stinger. Of the three, the Xpert was, to my suprise, the most explosive. The Stinger had the largest recovered diameter, and the Velocitor penitrated pretty deep.

This picture is of Remington Golden Bullet bulk, Federal Bulk, and Remington subsonic. The Golden Bullet had a large recovered diameter, very similar to the Stinger (BTW the Remington GB is my favorite plinking ammo. Despite many people having terrible experiences, my trouble with this ammo is minimal). The Remington subsonics expanded to a pretty good diameter for a bullet going only 1000 FPS or so, although the Winchester Xpert at the same velocity kicked its a$$. :) The Federal bulk wasnt too impressive though, barely expanding more than its original .22 diameter. It looked very much like a full wadcutter. However, if a deep penitrating bullet is ever needed, this would fit the bill, becuase penitration was pretty deep.

From my Heritage Arms .22LR/.22WMR 6 1/2 inch barrel.

This picture is of Remington Golden Bullet Bulk pack 36 grain HP (.22LR), Winchester Xpert bulk 36 grain HP (.22LR), and CCI TNT 30 grain JHP(.22WMR). All performed well, with the TNT being suprisingly explosive (the bullet looks small becuase it fragmented).

This picture is of Remington Primier VMAX 33 grain ballistic tip (.22WMR), and CCI MAXI MAG 40 grain JHP (.22WMR). Both bullets failed to expand, and looked like they could be reloaded. I was especially disappointed in the VMAX, which I had high hopes for.

This picture is of the Winchester and Remington bulk bullets upside down. Although hard to see, you can see the base of the bullet to give you an idea of how large the original diameter of the bullet looks like in comparison to the expanded bullet.

This info isnt very scientific, but I though it would give a general idea of what the chances are of a given bullet expanding over another.
