I bought this sad looking Winchester model 250 lever action .22 that was in a house fire.....

after some parts searching, lots of cleaning and sanding, then rebluing, the gun looks like new again

When you have a gun turning red or purple, try shocking the finish by dunking in cold water rinse and back into the salts. I had to do that more than once on a few guns, especially on a winchester nickle steel gun. It may not work on every gun but sometimes it works. My buddy used to work for Weatherby and taught me a few tips and tricks.

True artistry and you apparently have the knack for polishing before bluing as well.

Awesome again Tincan, thanks for the links!

My dad has a 512 he brought back from the scrap bin, he will find this interesting, I'm sure.

Have you ever done a Savage M99? If so, do you remember what year so I can find the article on your blog?

no sorry, I have not ever worked on a Savage 99

Here is a retro-10/22 I built. I has a vintage walnut Finger Groove Sporter stock, a steel receiver (from Kingston Armory), new take-off barrel and new anodized aluminum trigger housing (from Pike Arms). The steel parts were given a 5000 grit polished finish and blued in hot salts.

Just for grins I tested how well cold bluing works so I used this old Stevens Model 15A to try it on. I know it’s nowhere near as durable as hot bluing but as far as cosmetically looking good right now, I’m fairly impressed with it. I used Brownells Formula 44/40 cold bluing.
