I pulled the scope on my Remington/Zastava recently. I remembered firing the rifle years ago with its open sights just after receiving it as a gift on my 50th birthday — sweet wife.
I was going to the range this morning and decided to include the Model Five. I set up a target at 25 yards.
I have several "milk cartons" of the bulk packed Federal Auto Match, so it got the nod for this field trip. I like to transfer the loose packaged Auto Match to old Remington 100-round trays for convenience.
From the benchrest, I began to experiment with different sight-picture/POA combinations (the four lower bulls). As a final experiment, I fired ten rounds at the top bull from the offhand position.
Years ago, I remember being surprised to discover that the Zastava's trigger was fully adjustable (over-travel, take-up, and weight of pull). Well, that is, after removing the factory's nasty great globs of red paint from the trigger group. The trigger now has a relatively crisp break at 2.5 pounds.
I think I could really tighten these open-sight groups up with some more time-in on this rifle. I had a ram spinner up at 50 yards for offhand practice with one of my favorite scoped CZs. I decided to try a magazine full out of the Model Five. I took a solid stance, snugged the light-weight rifle into my shoulder, drew a fine bead, and placed the bead in the center of the steel. As the bead danced a little about the silhouette, I forced it into a tight figure eight pattern and began to press ... bang, clang! Five for five! I better keep this one and not just because it was a birthday gift from my wife. Click on links to videos:
