Hello,

If I buy a full auto AR-15 or M-16, complying with all NFA regulations, will it be legal to put a different upper on it and replace parts, including the auto sear? My understanding is that in this case the regulated part is the receiver, which is not likely to wear out, and that the sear and other parts can be replaced as needed. Am I wrong? My understanding is that if you buy a full auto sear or a sear in a trigger pack--if this is the regulated part--and the sear breaks, you are done.

Thanks,

If it's an AR15 drop-in auto sear, then the sear is the serialed, registered title II firearm. The AR15 lower also has a serial number, but the lower is just a title I firearm that happens to contain a title II firearm.

If it's an M16, then the lower receiver is the serialed, registered title II firearm. The pinned-in auto sear does not have a serial number and is not the registered part. If the M16 auto sear breaks for some reason, you just go buy another one for $5.
