I can get consistent 1”-1.5” groups out of a standard barrel Remington 597 Magnum with CCI maxi mag 40 gr TMJ. My Henry pump shoots worse with all ammo I have tried.

I agree that 22 Mag is a hunting round and not a target round and is built as such.

My old marlin 925 with $25 walmart scope shoots real close to 1moa.
All I did was lap the barrel using my improv lapping methoid. First used gojo orange hand cleaner to scrub out all copper, then scrubbed the bore with clay based car polish and when I got tired of scrubbing then I just dipped the exposed projectile tip in the car polish fired them to fire lap the barrel.
Then hand bedded the barrel.
I was only 15 years old so that was a while ago.
The only ammo available at the time was rem and winchester.

There was a guy here who talked his way into local CMP Rimfire Sporter matches with a Marlin .22 WRM and CCI ammo. He gave us LR shooters fits with that gun. Maybe it was luck, maybe the ammo has been cheapened since then.

RWS made some accurate .22 WRM but they did not stay in the business.

Probably the biggest reason I have no use for the rimfire guns, the quality of ammo just isn't there. I still have rimfire but don't shoot it much anymore.

I've had a couple 9422Ms (old ones) and a 648 Smith.
The round tht shot best was the WW HP. Scary good (the 648 was my IHMSA field pistol rig).
One of the 9422's did shoot better than the other.
But nothing super duper (can't remember what group size was with scoped one).
Just never warmed up to lever guns.
Been looking for a Sav/Anschutz 141M
Or maybe build my Contender into a .22 mag rifle

I think WW Super X .22 LR ammo to be lesser in quality than it used to be.
Suspect the .22 mag to have taken a dump as well.
Guys seem to like the Hornady flex tip stuff..........pay a pretty good penny for it when LGS gets it.
I too have thought about saying screw it and get a Hornet, ream to K.

Wonder if it'd be worth it to sort .22 mag by rim thickness, break into sub lots.

Perhaps weighing loaded ammo for uniformity might work better. Sort by weight in groups of about the same weight. It may take some pre-screening to determine the range of weight batches to place rounds in.

image.jpeg image.jpeg I think sometimes we get lucky and find a gem. I found a 1959 Marlin57M ( one of the old Levermatics ) about ten or so years ago. It has a 24 inch barrel, tube magazine, and wears a Bushnell scope. The walnut is in great shape and the bluing is better than 90%. The trigger is not the best , but it is still crazy accurate. The target in the picture is cherry picked , but it is the only one I have, and no the dime is not covering up a flyer.:)
