Someone has to say it - The Springfield Soccom II

Thanks, Texas. To be honest I was shown how by a Marine Gunny who didn't exhibit the patience required to get it into this sailor's thick skull.

Well, getting it installed on the rifle wasn't too bad, figuring out how to actually USE the thing caused me lots of grief :)

Still not completely sure I do it right, but it seems to work.

I recently bought one of these. Wanted an AR before they were banned. I have not been around ARs but this is nice for carrying through the alder thickets.

I want to get a scope for it but I am perplexed about how to mount it on the rail system, everything else I own in long guns have a wooden stock and bolt action. I also wonder about what kind of scope I could use and still have a good sight system for the close up shots.

Any ideas?

My SOCOM II was an odd purchase. A few months prior I had bought an M1A loaded and fallen head over heels in love with it. My favorite shop, which I now work at, had gotten a used, unfired SOCOM II off a GI who was deploying.

The first time I saw it, I thought it was hideous.

The second time I thought it was unpleasant.

The third time I thought it was "meh."

The fourth time I thought "you know, I have like 18 magazines that fit it."

The fifth time I thought it was kinda neat.

The sixth time I thought "man, $1600 is a lot of money..."

The seventh time I thought "well, he DOES do layaway...."

Yes, it's sitting in my safe. The ugly/beautiful little bastard child. I love it. Recoils like a damned .223, takes all my M1A mags, short and handy, and no heavier than my loaded model. I loaded up a mag of 7.62 black tip and made it my "mistaken address no-knock warrant" defense gun.

For a scope, look into a Leupold 3X PISTOL scope. You can mount it forward on the upper rail and still have proper eye relief. It's called a scout position mount.

Dr. T ------ I agree that the Socom2 is front heavy and MAYBE ugly {beauty in the eye}.

I do think the Socom 1 is a GREAT rifle ---- mine has less recoil then ANY .308 BR I have ever used.

Also think the wood stock gives a woody like reaction ----- photo up;

I still need to take a recent photo now that the stock is finished.

what m1a or even ar15 is pretty.

I actually think M1As are beautiful rifles. Like many antiques. ;)

In all seriousness, a wood-stocked M1A, M1 Garand, M1 carbine, or 1903 or 1917 is a thing of beauty.

The M14 is still in military service and has been since it was adopted. I was not clear you were making the same point, but so be it.

The M14 was withdrawn from widespread service before there was time for all units to even be equipped with it. You know I wasn't making that point. The M14, if left semi-auto only, would have been a fine rifle for WWII, though probably no better than the M1 Garand.

I recently got a Springfield National Match M1A with walnut stock, looks like the service rifle from 1960. Took me 2 or 3 weeks checking around several stores to finally find one in stock. I got a couple 20 round metal mags for it because the cheap plastic mags just didn't look right. I need to find one of those slings for it.

I've taken it to the range 3 times now and love it so far, just wish it didn't cost so much for 7.62x51 mm. I can barely afford to shoot the thing these days :(

You really are stuck in the Vietnam era aren't you?
Things have change for the better and there are no
longer any inherent problems in keeping them accurate.

Modernized M14s are extremely reliable and accurate.
