I was thinking about guns yesterday, a rare thing to do :D, I really am trying to build a basic set of guns that I will shoot frequently.

Except for CCW/HD guns I prefer to have something that isn't common.

I believe I have thought of a useful but slightly off beaten path trio of rifles that can cover all shooting I am really interested in currently.

I was thinking that the 38-55 and 375H&H would be singles, and the 375 Hawk/Scoville would be a Pseudo Scout (to allow use of stripper clips) on a '98 Mauser.

The 38-55 would be for fun and casual varmint (yotes) using mainly cast bullets, and deer (whitetails & mule deer). Would have open or aperture sites. Would be light wt and easy to carry.

The 375 H/S allows several power levels. With 38-55 bullets can have 35 Rem level loads with little recoil. With 210-250 X bullets can about match factory 338 Win mag. With 270-300 grain bullets it is about same as 375 Flanged.

The 375 H&H would be for Alaska & perhaps Africa someday. Note the H&H and H/S would probably travel together on serious (expensive) hunts, providing backup in case one rifle is damaged or such.

Also plan to get Game Getters and/or Alex caps for all three.

Thoughts?

Suggestions for actions for the 38-55? I want a single shot. What sights for the 38-55?

I know how I want the Pseudo scout set up, it will be designed to survive rough use.

Will probably use Ruger # 1 for the H&H might use Dakota. How hard is it to use Talley TNT mounts on Ruger? Do you have to remachine base?

Coot: It looks very close to what I am thinking, tang peep + open sights, but I am wanting something more like a carbine in wt & OAL.

I hope in a few years to move to eastern MT and spend time chasing varmints and fossils (dinosaurs & such).

Not a fanatic about either. More of a hobby. But plan to carry tools for both tasks. So want to keep wt of rifle down.
