So long story short, the girlfriends family lives up the Seattle area and she went up to visit with them for Christmas. She and I go up there quite often but we never have stopped really at all along the way since she always wants to get there ASAP. It just so happens that this time she took Amtrak up and then I am going to drive up later this weekend and we will drive back together. The point being that I will have the time to stop off at the giant Cabelas on the way.

What should I expect as far as gun stuff? I have not been able to find practice ammo for my .40 and am hoping that they will have some in stock.

So what should I expect? Is it a good place to shop and kill some time?

When I went to the one in Sidney NE. it was so big my mind just went into overload, you won't see it all in one day.

As stated earlier Cabella's is pretty proud of their stock and I don't think they sell ammunition in the bargin cave.

Where are you that you can't find .40 S&W at your local Wal Mart ?

(Damn, I said Wal Mart Justin's sure to close this thread now :D)

Call the ammo/gun counter to see that they have what you want for ammo. If they don't, Bullseye Shooter Supply in down town Tacoma is another source on your route, (2 minutes off the freeway near the Tacoma Dome). Butches in Seattle on Arora.

Other than that, Don't eat lunch before you go to Cabela's. Nice cafe inside. Plan for about 2 hours, as just walking around the exibits is an eye opener. It is not a store. It is an experience.

If you have credit cards near max'd out, leave them in the car! If you don't, they'll be max'd out when you leave. :D

Cabela's is an experience. It's the one place I go for ammunition nowadays. Their prices are fair on ammo and most things. Just don't buy any of their used guns. They seriously overprice them.

The only used gun they had that I seriously considered was a bubbified Mosin Nagant. Someone had tapped the top of the receiver for a scope, and replaced the bolt handle with a bent one that was bolted on. It seemed solid enough, though. Very good barrel, good wood. They wanted $200 for it. I'm positive it would have been a great shooter, and at that price would have performed as well as guns twice as expensive.

I love Cabelas, we have one about an hour and a half from where I live and it's always a treat to go there. The prices are really reasonable. I went there the other day and stocked up on some reloading stuff. I was there for about two hours and I could have stayed for another five or more........love the place!

That's just not true Joe........at least where I live it's not. Case and point, Gander Mountain RCBS 3 die set $54.99.... Cabela's RCBS 3 die set $ 38.99 I have receipt to prove it.

I haven't been in one of the stores for a while and things may have changed, but I recommend going straight to the "Bargain Cave" before anything else unless there is a must have, limited to supplies on hand only item on your list. In the Cave you will find returns (many have clearly been "bought" for the hunting season then returned, quality gear "rented" for the cost of shipping, :barf:) shopworn, and discontinued items, some of them at true bargain prices.

If the Lacey store has one and it is open, do not miss the Gun Library.

On Tuesday I'll be making my first trip to the (fairly) new Cabella's here in Maine. Looking forward to it. I might buy some ammo, I'm going shooting the day after so I'll need to stock up.

Laughably high used gun prices. Typically anywhere from 40% over the market to double or so.

You will be like a little kid on Christmas morning. Take a hanky to keep up with your drooling.

i didn't think their prices were all that out of line. bought a Marlin 981T for the same price as all the other gun shops had it for, $189. the firearms "library" is pretty cool. their camping stuff could be better. its mostly goofy Coleman junk. good selection of fishing gear that suits the northwest fish. salmon namely. (i'm a fishing nut too) pretty neat store with a good firearms selection. ammo prices were so-so unless you get their reloaded stuff in the green plastic boxes. that stuff is ok priced.

LUCKY BUMB. IM SURE THE GRAND OPENING WILL BE THE BEST DAY. MAY HAVE SOME GOOD STUFF ON SALE PROMOTIONAL STUFF. I WOULD TAKE THE DAY OFF OF WORK FOR THAT. sADDLY THERE ISNT A CABELAS AROUND MY AREA.

I get to watch my grandaughter during the Christmas break and she says, "Papa when are we going to Cabela's?" We went up there last tuesday and spent the day, and we had a great time. When you go take "MONEY" lotsa $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$--Have fun

There is a gun library at the Lacey store and as other posters have pointed out, it is a neat place to waste some time. One can beat their prices else where without much trouble, as a matter of fact threr is a Wall Mart just across the freeway that sells ammo cheaper. If you have never been to a Cabelas you will enjoy the Lacey store.:D

I've been to they Lacey store too, it really is amazing, but honestly I wonder how they stay in business and finance those amazing stores with the absurd prices they have. ALL guns/ammo/reloading stuff was way more than I can find it for almost anywhere back in Oregon, plus they charge tax!

The gun library is amazing. I could stay in there for hours. Some of the peices they have in there are hard to find pictures of, let alone the real thing!

Cabela's is like most stores: you'll find some good deals, and some absurd prices. Their ammo prices are fair, their selection is excellent. Their prices for clothing and most other gear are also quite reasonable. Their new guns are also generally well-priced. But their used guns are where you get the shaft. I've seen a used Ruger Hawkeye priced the same as I could buy it new.

expect to go into a trance-like state and your eyes to gloss over. Its a very dangerous place to go if your on a budget.

Its almost like the whole place was designed to get you to spend money...everything from the mounts, the displays, the music, the products, and the euphoria inducing psychoactive substances they must add to the air supply.:D

I saw a Ruger M77 in .30-06 that was the biggest beat up piece of crap I've ever seen, and they were asking $499.....what a rip off. But most other stuff is reasonable.
