Heres a good one. Im always told a sooty case neck is from an underpowered load. But yet supposedly it may mean the chamber may be slightly looser tollerance past the shoulder then is ideal.

So whats the truth when it comes to using factory ammo, remington 243 100 grain psp and hornady gmx in the same rifle?

You very well may have a chamber that is at the limit of tolerance.

I would try some handloads on brass thats been formed to your chamber, and reloaded appropriately.

If the soot problem goes away, you have your answer.

Far cheaper of an experiment than hitting up any quality gunsmith I know of.... and when/if it works- you have the answer for your troubles all in the same bag.

If the chamber is at the outside limit of tolerance ( large) you aren't going to be able to shape it smaller. If it was too small, you can ream it larger, but as the say....measure twice, cut once....

I have soot on my case necks, in 308 and 30-06 and probably every other caliber if I could remember. Don't worry about it. It takes time and pressure to get the neck to press against the chamber, I don't doubt that case necks get a bit of soot in that time period. What is more important is whether or not the load shoots well. It if does, then don’t worry about soot.
