Sound Suppressing a Mech Tech CCU

Hi,

I have a couple Mech Tech carbines.
One is in 9mm G17 configuration and the other is a 1911 .45ACP.

I was wondering if anyone has ever done this and what their experiences were...

Suppressed weapons, like Tactical Race Pistols (w/compensators), often require some "tweaking" of the recoil spring to run reliably. I'm not familiar enough with the Mech Tech carbines to be an authority...but they operate from a blow-back action don't they? Is the recoil spring easy to replace? Does the manufacturer offer a variety of spring weights? Because I would hate to go to the trouble & expense of a suppressor only to later discover that the spring mix-&-match necessary to make it run wasn't readily available.
 
Yes it's blowback. I'm not sure about what springs are available...
I remember seeing some stuff about Mech Tech carbines on this forum, and even a question about sound suppression, but there were no answers regarding supressing one...

Doc, it could be good for a stretch at the graybar hotel. Suppressors are: NFA items, and and the BATFE has been known to crucify people for innocuous parts that could be made into a surpressor. To quote King Arthur in Monty Python: "Run away! Run away!"
 
Hutch, many people here own suppressors and other NFA items (myself included). As long as laws are followed, there is no harm.

As for suppressing the CCU, I wouldn't think there would be any serious issue with doing so, as the blowback system of operation tends to work well with suppressors.
 
Not to be combative, PTK, but the BATFE wants $200 for each suppressor you own, even if you fabricate it yourself. Are you in the USA, btw? We are talking about real suppressors ("Silencers"), aren't we? Not muzzle brakes or flash hiders?

How does a tax ($200) and paperwork = illegal to you? I am in the USA, and I am talking about firearms suppressors as in "silencers". I also own a number of short-barreled rifles and shotguns, all legally registered per the 1934NFA.

As I said, as long as the law is followed, there is no harm.

I know almost a half-dozen people who legally own suppressors, and am considering getting one myself at some point. There's nothing illegal about them if you're willing to jump through the hoops.
 
I know I have to go through the BATF and pay a $200.00 tax.
I wouldn't consider not going the legal route. I've never seen or heard of anyone using a suppressor on a CCU and thought I'd ask if anyone had + or - feedback about doing so...

Let us know how you suppress the "twang" the spring makes when you fire your gun.I have one and love it but the spring noise is a little strange..LOL

These conversion units are not that common in my experience, maybe that is why you aren't getting anyone who has done this.

I can't find any info on subsonic 9mm from a 16 inch barrel, but here is a link to some performance out of a 9 inch SBR.

I think the big decision is which caliber suppressor to get. If you go ahead with the purchase confirm the speed of 9mm out of your barrel, but I'm pretty sure you will still be subsonic. My preference would be to go with the 9mm because it makes a good platform for suppression on many pistols, some like 45 b/c it is naturally subsonic so you can shoot a variety of ammo. Also consider you will be able to use the suppressor for the Mech Tech on the pistols alone in those calibers. I don't know about 45, but you can buy a drop in Lone Wolf threaded barrel for your Glock cheap ($100-$115 I think). Now take into account the versatility of the suppressor you buy. Will it work on the Glock pistol and the Mech Tech, and down the road maybe on an SBR or select fire SMG?

Please post pics if you do it, those carbines would look good with suppressors I think, good luck.
 
Hopefully in a month I can better answer this question. I have a Gemtech 40 blackside can on order and the mechtech is at the shop waiting to get threaded. My concern with this setup is getting the bullets subsonic. With the added barrel lenght, I am assuming about a 250 fps gain in velocity. Will have to see. Not sure how to quiet the spring twang when shooting though. Will update when all up and running.
 
So I'm not the only one who's thought of this:)

One way to get around staying subsonic is to shorten the barrel...

As for the "Twang" sound from the Mech Tech, I don't have a clue how to change that...
It seems to be most noticable by the shooter, because his cheek is resting on the stock (clost to your ear). My son loves that noise:scrutiny:
