I was considering purchase of something like a Bushmaster Modular Carbine with telestock, but I see even in the BM catalog, the rifle costs noticeably more than the sum of the parts. (Excise taxes? )

The lower has to come through an FFL, but the upper doesn't . . .

So . . . any leads on where I can purchase a new "no ban" Bushmaster modular carbine upper at a decent price? (I mean, other than Bushmaster, which charges MSRP.)

They should be signifigantly lower from a dealer I would hope. Anyone that carries Bushmaster should be able to look up and determine what they'd charge you for one of those.

If it's still unreasonably spendy, then the best bet is to buy a regular upper and slap on the aftermarket parts yourself. $200 for the YHM rail system. $150 for the YHM BUIS, $30 for the panels, and $xx fluting if you want that.

There are many manufacturers of parts for the AR.

Even more manufacturers of accessories.

If you want something similar to that model of Bushmaster, but it does not have to be exactly like it, and you do not mind assembling your own, I would recommend looking at all the parts available on the internet and picking which ones fit your needs the best and building your own.

Living in Texas I am sure there are many THR members who would be glad to show you what they have and help you assemble an AR.

If you have any questions I can try to answer them.

NMshooter, I see all kinds of parts on the Internet and at gun shows, and some are really, really, cheap . . . but when I go to a carbine match and see some guy having problems, 9 out of 10 times it's with a Frankenrifle he put together himself. (But he saved lots of money!!!)

I imagine someone who *knows* what he's doing will put together a good rifle . . . but all too many *experienced* people seem to *know* just a little less than they think they do, and seem satisfied if their frankenrifle "only jams a couple of times" during a match.

The main reason I'm looking for a Bushmaster upper is, as I mentioned in the original post, their "Modular Carbine" has an MSRP noticeably higher than the sum of the parts MSRPs, even after factoring in the case, sling, etc. you get with the complete rifle. Rifles are discounted, so I figure components ought to be, too . . . if you catch my drift. So assembling the rifle with all BM components *ought* to save me some money, and it won't be a Frankenrifle.

I hope.

Consider checking the equipment exchange on AR15.com. You might find what you're looking for there. Good Luck.

So long as you stay away from the really really cheap parts (and the folks who sell them) you should not have any problems.

LMT, CMT, Troy, LaRue that should get you started.

Nothing wrong with using a Bushmaster upper reciever, or barrel, or any other parts for that matter.

If you want something preassembled try www.mstn.biz or www.adcofirearms.com

If all you want is a Bushmaster carbine with a rail fore end you can install that yourself. The Surefire M-73 attaches like a set of handguards, can't get any easier than that.
