Source for hulls

I am looking for a retail source for AA 20 gauge hulls for reloading (other than eBay). Anyone know of one?

Also, the above is quite interesting for those who reload .410 shells. Shooting split shot sinkers connected together with string to create tighter patterns struck me as very inventive. Sort of like the old naval trick of attaching cannon balls together with chain to rip down the rigging of opposing ships.
 
The best way is to buy a case or 10 of ammo and get the hulls from shooting them. 20 gauge target hulls are 12-15 cents each here, even at 12 cents each that is $3 per BOX of hulls!!!!! Buy a case of good target loads and you can get them at around $5 per box, so you shoot the factory loads for $2 per box and have once fired hulls. My 20 gauge reloads are running me about $2 per box, so I don't save any money at all and the factory does the work of the first loading for me. I like that.

I would also recommend the STS Remington hulls over the AA. The new AA hulls are not nearly as good as they were a few years back. The STS is a more durable hull, it loads and shoots as well as anything else too. It pains me to say that since I despise Remington ammunition, but their STS line of shotshells is as good as can be bought.
 
Thanks. I like your way of thinking on economics. I still have a bunch of the old AA shells and wondered how the newer HS one stacked up. My old ones are finally wearing out so I have been getting ready to replace them. I haven't bought loaded ammunition for years so it will be a shock. Remington STS........hmmm.
 
You can also try the cheap Remington dove and quail loads that are sold at WallyWorld and other fine purveyors of arms. They run about $3 per box of 25rds at the aforementioned "mart",and provide the rather nice Remington Unibody plastic hull,which loads very similar to the STS,with slightly higher capacity. The current Winchester cheap loads use abominable polyformed seperate plastic basewads,and the Federal cheap loads use their traditional rolled paper basewad (which isn't too bad,but varies in capacity). The current AA's as mentioned, suck.
 
I couple hundred AA hull. I thought about reload them but I yet buy a conversion kit for my press. Now that I am totally engulfed by the cartridge reloading, I doubt that I ever touch it again. Let's me know if you want it.
 
My source for all hulls is the ground and trash barrels of my club. My five year old is part bird dog when it comes to scrounging hulls. :D Can't remember when the last time I actually bought shotgun shells (other then deer slugs).

+1 on using Remington hulls for reloading both 12 and 20 ga. The new AA's just aren't as good as they used to be nor as good any Remington including the green/black plastic, Wallyworld cheapie packs. I can't comment on 28 ga and .410 hulls.

If you want 12 ga AA's, I can send you a bunch (two white flyer boxes full) for say shipping + whatever you feel is fair.
 
Somebody needs to do for shotshell reloaders what Starline Brass did for handgun round reloaders.

I'll be first in line for top shelf, never-fired, hulls.

Thanks for all the offers guys. I bought a partial case of Remington 20 gauge. The nuts I shoot with shoot all winter so I'll be reloading those before long.

IIRC some of the major manufacturers (Winchester) used sell just hulls in bulk/quantity (I remember when the plastic AA's were "New" and being sold as components).

You can still buy just hulls, but not from Winchester or Remington like in the olden days. Check out www.reload-nmra.com I've seen never-been-fired hulls on one of the links in there.

Remember the 40 y/o AA one pc compression formed hull is NO MORE. The equipment finally got old and tired and instead of replacing it - AA is now the HS hull. NOT THE SAME.

Gun Clubs often have sources, check the corkboards and ask around. Some older shooters may have a stash of the old AA or Blue Magic, age and such they may be slowing down or retiring.

Great buys on older MEC and similar reloaders too. Here is the deal, some of these folks have no family they can / or want to leave firearm stuff to. Saddle up and learn, especially if you have kids learning.

Take this seasoned shooter under your wing, reload shells for him so he can shoot, drive him to the range. Seasoned shooters have a LOT of knowledge they can pass forward.

They may not feel like shooting that day, they will be so grateful just to instruct, just to watch, share watching you, your kids continuing the tradition.

I know this all too well. I was such a kid.

I have given thousands of hulls to kids...you geta funky looking package in the mail, inside a spent 28 ga hull, some orange clay pcs, "I did it, with them shell I helped load!!". The Polaroid is some young man, with a grin a mile wide.

Another package in the mail is from a freckled faced girl. Whom sent you dove feathers..."Thank you Mr. Steve" ...grandpa in the pic, you can feel the tradition being passed forward.

Adopt a seasoned shooter. To keep it- give it away
