One possible alternative would be to purchase a laminated stock for a detachable box magazine Marlin XT22. That would require cutting a groove below the barrel channel for the magazine tube and fitting a block into the inlet for the detachable box magazine. A lot of work, but less than starting with a blank.
A while ago I looked at the Marlin XT22TR. I like tube feed 22s especially Marlins. The problem I had with the XT22TR was the plastic stock. It just didn't feel, look or balance right for me. At that time I thought "no problem" I'll just get a Boyd's replacement stock, no such luck. I could not find a wooden or laminate replacement stock, so I deferred buying the XT22TR.
Luckily for me, several months ago I found an old (circa 1941) Marlin 81 DL in a local gun shop. It's in pretty good shape and shoots very nicely. A good old fashion heavy wooden stock. So I'm set as far as tube feed wooden stocked Marlin bolt action 22s.
