I contacted Victor at JLD for his comments about the SA Surpus Ammo:

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you, the thing with SA ammo is hit and miss, some lots burn clean and some lots leave so much soot that clogs the camber flutes and the rifle quits cycling after about 15 to 20 rounds,

JLD Enterprises, Inc.

Recommended ammunition for break in is Remington UMC 150 grains FMJ. (200 rounds)

Shoot one round and clean barrel.

Shoot 3 rounds and clean barrel.

Shoot 5 rounds, clean barrel and let it cool down.

Shoot 10 rounds, clean the barrel and let it cool down.

Keep on repeating the 10 round strings until you complete the 200 rounds, after this you can shoot both Surplus and Commercial ammo, that is .308 and 7.62 X 51 NATO.

Surplus ammunition:
STAY AWAY from Indian, South African, Austrian and CAVIM from Venezuela.
GOOD SURPLUS: British, Lake City (US), Argentine, Portuguese, Australian and Spain surplus.

Thank you
Victor

I shoot nothing but SA surplus in my PTR and FAL and have never had an issue. It's surplus, so YMMV - but so far so good for me. It's so cheap if I have to spend some extra time cleaning afterwards, that's OK.

Gun cleaning is very relaxing for me, anyway!

I've also had nothing but good experience with SA. It doesn't seem to be as accurate for me as some commercial hunting loads, but as far as function, 100%.

i've had NO PROBLEMS what so ever w/ s.a. surplus in an M1A, imbel fal, dsa fal, sar8 and century fmp g3 clone. the only surplus that scares me is indian .308.......

I have an old post ww2 parker hale 308 ultralite, that is a one hole punch. Usually if I geek out and am worried about my zero, i go to the sa ammo. It is a solid 1 inch grouper for me. so i likey .

I've had no problem running SA through my PTR. When done shooting I break it down and wash out the chamber area with brake parts cleaner and clean as normal later. I've heard some lots of 1981 SA are very gummy and can cause problems. I would stay away from the Indian though.

Does anyone have a link to more info on that? I have at least a little bit of the '81. Not sure what my newest case is; haven't cracked it open yet.
