My son wants to head west and shoot prairie dogs for a few days when school lets out in June. I'm thinking South Dakota. Since it will take 2 days to get there I want to set up at least 1 day as a "sure thing". Meaning I'd like at least 1 day where we'll actually get some shots on prairie dogs instead of driving around aimlessly on public land hoping to spot a dog town. Does anyone have a guide or ranch they've had good luck with?

Thanks.

It looks like a guide is required on Rosebud. Is there any trick to picking one or doesn't it even matter? We don't need pampered - I can provide our benches, lunch, transportation, etc. As long as the "guide" can get us to a dog town or two.

Call the rosebud tribal cop or game warden and ask them for a contact. They are more likely to recommend the kind of guide you want. I shot dogs years ago before they required a tribal "guide". We ran into some trouble with locals but the tribal game officer was very professional and great to deal with. The res is its own world.

We have used Jim River Guide Service a couple times and are scheduled to go back with them this summer. The shoot prairie dogs around Pierre, SD.

We go every year to the very SE part of Montana. Lotsa dogs there. Drive is about 22-24 hours on the road. First trip we were gonna stay at a motel. Big sign at the front desk advised a high number of thefts from vehicles. We ended up taking all our guns in with us. Real PITA as we had over twenty rifles for four guys. But better than having no rifles in the morning.

Now we drive straight thru.

If you haven't gone before and want any ideas so you don't forget anything, I made a list can forward.
