Hi guys, a few of my friends want to shoot some prairie dogs, we live in south Mississippi and want to drive to the closest place to get into some good dog towns. With that said we would prefer to help out ranchers/farmers so do any of you know some places either in Tx. panhandle, Kansas, South Dakota that we may be able to go? We don't want to spend $300 a day to shoot the little rats either. Thanks Mac We are wanting a spring 2014 trip.

Unless you get lucky and find some blm or Forest Service National grasslands ground that still allows prairie dog shooting, it's likely going to cost you a pretty good chunk for a few days of shooting. It's became big business and outfitters have a pretty good backlog of folks wanting to spend the money..
Might google up the county weed and pest offices in places you're interested in going and ask them if they have any land owners that welcome prairie dog shooters.

Thanks for the info, the quest continues. I can hunt in Wy for free, but that is a long hike from Miss. I guess it is like anything else, if it is sporting related get ready to shell out the dinero.

You can hunt prairie dogs here for free on public land provided the blm/forest service/fws haven't shut some areas off due to black footed ferret recovery projects, sage grouse critical habitat, preebles jumping mouse and the list goes on... Sometimes you can find a landowner that will let someone in for free to shoot, but you have to search them out.
Call the chamber of commerce in the towns near where you want to go and ask them.

Valentine Nebraska,
Be respectful to ranchers and you will be invited back.
Valentine is just south of the S Dakota border midstate. My family welcomed respectful hunters that did not cause us problems. Always cautious not to leave trash, rut crops and violating. Nice ones came back every year, yet I ran a lot of them off.
They do however want you to shoot hollow points for bullet disintigration.
They dont like ricoshet. Just use more ,17 than 22.250 and all is good.
Cost to much to shoot center fire very much if you really want to shoot.
Take a coyote caller and hunt them mid day while the Pdogs rest. Never met a rancher that objected to killin a few coyotes!.
New shootng platform on top of my ATV trailer. Pictures tomorrow.
Dont like doing prone shooting in the dirt any more. Damn snakes and bugs.
Last trip we each shot 600 rounds in 3 days. Try and go by June 10th before the grass gets too high!
