SP 101 for Mother's Day

I put money down on an SP 101 for my wife tonight, pretty happy about it. This will be her first firearm. 8 years ago, when we got married, she was not very happy to have even a shotgun in the home. Now, she says she wants to carry; kind of sexy if you ask me.

I need to find some defense and shooting class for her. We will weight until Mothers day.

Any one think this is like buying a microwave for Mother's Day? The main reason I chose this is that I figured we would talk about this for years, unless I got it for her.

Contact your NRA rep. They offer home safety courses as well as firearm orientation and self defense training. If they are not in the phone book then go on line to NRA and look up your Texas reps and trainers.

That is a good idea, I thought I would talk to someone at a local gun club. We would be willing to go to Salt Lake if we had to.

Great choice! SP101 is on my list of next revolver to buy and if California ever allows ccw (Don't worry, i'm not holding my breath.) it would be my carry.

No, it's not like buying a microwave or a vacuum cleaner. Those are tools we men invented to make womens' lives easier. A gun, though, is a personal item...ummm...like a diamond ring or a pearl necklace, but more handy and serves a purpose. A gun doesn't depreciate like jewelry, either.

I have a GP100 and love it.I will be getting a sp101 in 327 in the next few years,I'm waiting for more ammo choice's.

I talked my mom into a DAO Ruger SP 101 and she has gotten pretty good with it. I started her out with .38 Specials and transistion to
.357 Magnums when she got the hang of the little Ruger.
I would agree you picked a find handgun for your wife, and some instruction is a great idea.

You mentioned you would be willing to travel to Salt Lake, Get Some Guns and Ammmo has a firearms course that is specificaly for women.

I cannot tell you anything about its content or quality I only know that they have it. They do have a nice range as well so you would have something to do while she was there.

I am also a big fan of the SP101. They are a bit heavier to carry than some of the other brands but the little extra weight helps with felt recoil and controllability and face it Ruger makes a work horse for a lot of shooting at the range. My wife has one for home defense and loads it with .38sp 125gr +P loads. She found she could shoot all 5 shots rapidly keeping within a 4in-desert plate at 15 feet. She can shoot the magnums but felt it would be to hard to control under the pressure of a bad situation. Over the years we added Hogue grips and had a wolf spring kit installed to reduce trigger pull. The Hogue grips are a bit longer than stock and may not work well for concealed carry in a bag or on a small person but helps with heavy magnum recoil.

I am happy for your purchase and hope your wife enjoys hers as much as mine has.

I have hogue grips on my Alaskan, love them, but held a sp101 with hogue grips and found that the spacing for the fingers was to small for me. I will let her shoot it stock for a little bit before I tell her of the alternative. One, because I would like to shoot it; and two, because I want her to decide what to do with it so she feels that it is really hers.

My next gun is an Compact XD in .45. However, if I like hers enough, I will get one for myself to carry.

Girodin, I call them at Get Some today, not very friendly or helpful. I think the guy was busy or something. If they can figure out their dates for the Woman Only class, I think I will get her signed up. Thanks for the headsup.
