I am fresh from some revolver training and a bit frustrated. The HKS speedloader seems to hang up on the factory grips on my Sp101. This is happening with both .38 and .357 loads. Do I apply a little xacto knife action to the factory grips or do I replace the grips entirely i.e Hogue Nylon or Rubber Monogrip?

The best method I've seen for re-sculpting rubber grips for speedloader clearance is a dremel tool "sandpaper drum" in a somewhat fine grit. The results look a lot better than X-Acto knife work.

Hint: take the grips OFF, polish a bit, stick 'em back on (without screwing 'em down) to check fit, take 'em off, polish a little more, slow and easy until you're at the right point.

I'd re-sculpt the factory grip, myself. If you screw it completely up you're only out $20 for the rubber core (assuming you haven't trashed the wood panels, very unlikely).

Just replace 'em with Hogue rubber monogrips. There already clearanced for speed loaders and look and feel much nicer than the factorygrips.

I think the grip's effect on the empty case ''dump'' is as .... or more important. Sure, some relief can be needed .... Hogues will help. I have CT grips and they seem to provide enough clearance.

I do find tho that H&K loaders less efficient and more likely to hang up .... whereas, my ''Comp 1'' Safarilands are forgiving and quick ... much better IMO.

My Hogues might have been funky. But, they actually made it way HARDER to get a speedloader into my SP101 than the stock grips.

What Jim says. A little time & effort and save your $20 for ammo to practice with.

See, the WORST that you can do to rubber grips with a dremel sanding barrel is make things ugly - so long as you don't work with the grips ON THE FRAME and scratch the hell out of metal.

That's tip one - alter the grips OFF the gun, then check fit (to the gun and speedloaders) as you go.

If you "Bubba-ize" the grips TOO badly, the gun will still be usable until you score another grip :p.

Another tip: most bicycle rubber grips are basically the same compound in rubber gun grips. Bike grips are a few bucks a pack new, or find old used ones...or motorcycle grips other than the foam type from a junkyard.

Screw around with those if you're not confident of your skills :). See which Dremel bits do a reasonably fine finish, and which rip hell out of rubber :D.

Keep the input coming. This "problem" is undoubtedly the justification I needed to buy a dremel/ryobi tool.:)

Here's how you find out if you need a Dremel or good equivelent.

1) Stand in your bedroom, door closed.

2) Are you alone? Good.

3) Drop trou.

4) Question: is there something dangling down there, with two round things under it? Then you're a male.

Decision made: you need a Dremel or similar :D.

If not: change it to "probably" need...

:neener:
