Wondering if this is normal for an SP, as it does not occur on any of my other firearms.

There is an extension/notch on the frame directly to the rear of the Sp101 cylinder, below the cylinder release knob, adjacent to the star.

With the cylinder open, when pushing the extractor rod, the rim of a cartridge will catch on this notch on the frame, preventing the rod from being pushed all the way.

The rod can be pushed all the way provided the star is at such an angle that it will clear the notch on the frame. Hence, full use of the extractor rod is dependent on the angle of the star and the cartridges.

This normal for an Sp101?

In all other revolvers I own, the extractor rod can clear the frame when the cylinder is open independent of angle or position.

so you are catching the star on the cylinder stop on the frame? onmost revolvers the stop is narrow enough that its less than the width of the cylinder in excess of the star, and that will prevent this from happening. I think it could also happen on an older S&W model 36 which is also a 5 shot with a small cylinder. So the answer is try pointing the barrel straight up when you hit the ejector rod and you will probably avoid this issue as the cylinder will not be resting flush on the frame.

Yep, only instead of catching the star it's catching the rim of a bullet. Might have that notch slimmed down a millimeter or two so it can clear appropriately.

I've had mine bump into the grips of the gun, but never had a spent casing get hung up on the cylinder stop. Are you orienting the gun fairly horizontaly when you eject, with the open cylinder parallel to the ground and pivoting towards the sky? Then gravity pulls the case down towrds the cylinder stop maybe?

Picture of it hung up please if you can.

Just to test it, I have the muzzle pointed down and cylinder completely open. Rim catches unless I spin the star so that it can clear it by not passing that area.

Not a big deal since the cases literally just fall out after firing when I go muzzle up, just wondering it was within spec.

It sounds like you might have a problem there. I don't see how that could be happening unless your crane is damaged or the cylinder stop is out of spec. If I rotate a loaded chamber around so it is in line with the cylinder stop, the rim of the cartridge comes close, but definitely stays clear of the stop. It ejects with no problem.

See. Close but no obstruction by the cartridge.
