After purchasing an SP101 I've taken it home and dry fired it a few times. In DA the hammer partially obscures the sight pictures as I pull the trigger back. Is this normal on an SP101. Is it normal on other small carry revolvers? I'm new to handguns and would appreciate some info on this.

I can see the hammer moving if I try to see it, but it shouldn't be noticeable if you are focusing intently on the front sight. I'm curious to see what others say.

I don't understand how the hammer can be in the sight picture. The hammer is below the rear sight as it is part of the frame / top strap. Unless the hammer is somehow grossly miss-shapened and I can't really see that either. I think you must be watching the hammer. Post some pictures of the gun.

I just took a machinist rule and layed it across the top of the frame and down ito the groove that forms the rear sight, allowing the edge of the rule to come across the top of the hammer spur of my 2.25 SP. Without measureing the gap, I would estimate that there is close to .030" between the edge of the rule and the top of the hammer spur. After unloading the gun, I took the same straight edge and again laying it across the top of the frame and down into the rear sight notch, I very very slowly DA the gun. At the very highest point in the arc of the hammer; the frame strikeing face of hammer just bare came into contact with the straight edge but did not raise the rule. At no point in the arc did the hammer enter the sight picture.

You are anticipating the recoil and dropping the muzzle.

The bullets you fire will strike the target low and left if you are right handed.

Lost of dryfire practice will help you overcome this bad habit.

I have an SP101 and the front sight is minimal at best though.

The rear notch is approx. .070 deep.

I just laid a machinist's rule on the top of the front sight and on the top of the rear sight. As the hammer arcs back, it comes closer to the rule than .070, partly obscuring the sight picture.

It's not an aftermarket part. The gun is brand new.

A simple solution would be to radius the top of the hammer slightly.

No Bill, don't lay the rule on top of the front sight and then thru the groove of the rear sight; that would mean that your burying the front sight in the rear sight. The rear sight notch on my gun is .074" deep. Usual sight picture is top of the front sight lined up with the top of the rear notch with a six o'clock hold, unless your are doing something creative.

"No Bill, don't lay the rule on top of the front sight and then thru the groove of the rear sight"

Pistol Toter, I didn't. Read my post again. Here's what I wrote:

"I just laid a machinist's rule on the top of the front sight and on the top of the rear sight."

On mine, the top of the hammer just very slightly starts to rise into the bottom of the rear notch on slowfire DA. It doesn't obstruct anything and makes zero difference in the sight picture.
I've never even noticed it before till I saw this thread & just checked my SP. My attention is on the top of the sights, not the bottom, and this has no practical affect on the sight picture whatever for me. :)

Bill,
I don't know!!?? You must have something wrong with the hammer. :uhoh: Post some pictures. Unload the GUN!!! Lay the machinist rule down in the rear sight groove without it being in contact with the front sight at all, with the rule extending back and over the top of the hammer. MAKE SURE THE GUNS UNLOADED BEFORE THE NEXT STEP. Now slowly stage the trigger allowing it to start through the arc. The hammer may come in contact with the edge of the rule but if it doesn't displace or pickup the rule, the sight sould be clear. :scrutiny: I have a 2.25" my son 3.0625" and both are just alike except for the obvous barrel length. NO sight picture problem; I painted mine yellow, his are orginal, they're small but you don't generally need complicated sights on what is in all actualality a defense gun. There is no sight obstruction cause by the hammer on either of our guns. All else fails call Ruger.

With that model, when it's needed, is a precise and carefully aimed shot the method of use? It's desinged for concealed carry/defensive purposes. Concentrating on the front sight should be a difficult action during the times it's used.

well just checked mine, never noticed before, but sure enough the hammer gets above the bottom of the rear sight notch.. now quit watching the bottom of the notch cause thats not important. its the top of the sights that need to be lined up.

I kind of like how the hammer is sort of an extension of the rear sight, when aiming for a shot. The only time I notice it is with a very slow double-action pull, which is not a shot I could see much practical use for. With any other shot, double or single action, I don't notice the hammer at all.
